As people are living longer and many young adults are struggling to gain financial independence, about a quarter of U.S. adults (23%) are now part of the so-called “sandwich generation."

Americans in their 40s are the most likely to be sandwiched between their children and an aging parent. More than half in this age group (54%) have a living parent age 65 or older and are either raising a child younger than 18 or have an adult child they helped financially in the past year. By comparison, 36% of those in their 50s, 27% of those in their 30s, and fewer than one-in-ten of those younger than 30 (6%) or 60 and older (7%) are in this situation.

𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗲𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀

Florida lawmakers gave final approval Monday to a plan that would 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀, amid debate about how it would affect residents.

The Senate voted 28-9 to pass the bill (HB 1239), which was approved Friday by the House in an 80-31 vote. It is ready to go to Gov. Ron DeSantis.

𝗟𝗮𝘄𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟭 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗯𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿’𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Supporters argued, in part, that the changes would help address staffing shortages that have led at least some nursing homes to leave beds empty because of a lack of workers.

𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝟮.𝟱 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘆. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀.

Also, current law requires that certified nursing assistants and licensed nurses provide a weekly average of 3.6 hours of direct care per patient per day. The bill would keep that 3.6-hour average, but 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀, 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿?

A Care Manager represents a growing trend to help full time, employed family caregivers provide care for loved ones living close by or living far away. Care managers are also particularly useful in helping caregivers at home find the right services and cope with their burden.

Services from care managers should be something that every family takes advantage of, but in reality very few families use them. Care managers could go a long ways towards helping the family find better and more efficient ways of providing care for a loved one. The concept is simple. The family hires a professional adviser to act as a guide through the maze of long-term care services and providers. The care manager has been there many times. The family is experiencing it usually for the first time.

Hiring a care manager should be no different than hiring an attorney to help with legal problems or a CPA to help with tax problems. Most people don't attempt to solve legal problems on their own. And the use of professional tax advice can be an invaluable investment. The same is true of using a care manager.

There is a 𝗵𝘂𝗴𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 between a living will and a Do Not Resuscitate Order in Florida. As part of your estate and incapacity planning, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆, 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹. These documents will prepare you and your family to take care of your legal and financial decisions.

Your living will is the written statement of your end-of-life wishes. It says that if you are in an end-stage condition, a terminal condition or a persistent vegetative state, you would want certain life-prolonging procedures.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗢𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱, 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻'𝘀 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗖𝗣𝗥 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂. This Florida form is always on yellow paper so that it can be easily identified by everyone. Your physician signs this document and is typically not provided from your attorney. If you have a DNRO and are home, you would typically hang it on your refrigerator as EMS responders are trained to look for this paperwork.
