One of my patients asked me” do you know the people in your life?” I said well of course yes. She responded , “yes but do you really know the people in your life, you know the person who brings you food in the restaurant, the one that brings your mail, changes your oil, directs traffic at the kids’ school and the teachers, cleans the building where you work? I always asked their names and if they have a family and make them feel like they matter.” Needless to say, this was a session that benefited me more than anything that happened that day. Our community has changed since I moved to Amelia Island 11 years ago, but the people are still there, bringing the mail, selling you stuff at the farmers market, checking you in at urgent care, trying to find a parking spot. I thought about this as I ate at the new Indian restaurant last night. the owners are so nice and the food is so amazing! I learned they painted and decorated the place themselves, somehow managing to paint a teal wall to be the perfect contrast with inexpensive but gorgeous golden lamps. The painting of the ceiling navy blue was a brave move! They come from Jacksonville and I hope they do well. If you have one of those people in your life that deserves a shoutout, message me. I am going to start posting about them on my business page, if they give me their permission. I anticipate that many of them won’t. So ask them their names, and if they have a family.

Nothing makes me happier at my desk than doing our productivity reports and finding out all our clinicians are absolutely killing it and thinking about the wonderful humans they are. So thankful for our team! We did great this year and we are projected to bump it up next year. Love you all.

Black and white pictures have a timeless quality. Perhaps it is because the first pictures ever developed from a camera had no color due to limitations in early technology and suddenly we dont know what year it is when we look at them, or maybe because it makes our eye focus on contrast, making the contextual elements that tell time kind of meaningless. I thought I would celebrate my friend and colleague Dr. Dutchak by posting a black and white picture because she really is timeless, and, when you are around her the background noise stops mattering and all that matters is you as a person. Denise Dutchak it was your birthday this week and we owe you the usual white cake at MAPS when we all return! But I think I speak for all of us when I say thank you for making everything better and for making all of us feel we are perfect the way we are no matter how messy. Love u.

MAPS INTEGRATED WELLNESS (MAPS Psychiatry and Wellness) UPDATE: Wanted to let our community know length of wait for our services and how we handle increased demand:
Psychiatry: Taking new patients. Dr. Dutchak is scheduling in January, Dr. Soleh in late November/December, Ross and Tasha taking patients in a couple of weeks as they are more recent hires.
Acupuncture and Medical Marjuana (mental health only): Depends on Dr. Dutchak's schedule.
Neuropsychology (child and adult): I personally perform these evaluations. I am working literally all the time trying to get in as many people as I can in until I find a second Psychologist to help and my wait is about two months. In three months, I have performed over 100 evaluations. please be patient with me as I establish this service. Sometimes the testing results raise another question, and I bring patients back for more testing at no extra cost and it may delay the process a bit. I do not want to give you a half answer just to make money with another paying client.
Psychotherapy: Our eight therapists are full for pediatrics and adults. We are actively hiring two more to schedule soon. You can call and put your name on the waiting list, and we will call once we hire new one. We see all ages from toddlers to older adults.
Registered Dietitian: Taking appointments now
Personal Training: Taking clients (I think?)
Veterans Evaluations and Social Security/court ordered: Taking appointments now (may also be two months wait).
When our providers are more than two months out at MAPS, I hire new ones. So, stay tuned!

So how big is your drawing board? Does it have space for the turns and detours behind the small failures ? Is there room for all the possibilities? Do you roll up your sleeves , put on boots to follow a map while you draw, or stare at the blank spaces with trepidation adjusting your tie? Don’t forget only you can draw this work of art. Mine can’t fit yours if you really draw your own. I will never be able to make yours. I hope you use the courage available to all , to pour your art on this table..with all the scratches and doodles and rough patches only you can navigate, make, and envision. I will, no doubt , continue to draw on this board we called MAPS four years ago. With kindness, Dr. B

For the parents of the kids I have evaluated for autism and adhd in the past month at MAPS Integrated Wellness and for those who are wondering if their kid is neurodivergent in any way and what that means: I opened my panel last month to use a skill I mastered a long time ago: evaluation of brain function in children and adult. In that month, I have performed about 50 evaluations and reacquainted myself with how wonderful it is to run into kids that experience the world in different, marvelous ways. It has been an honor for me to help you figure out your child’s uniqueness, hearing the sacrifices you made and witnessing your love. My hope is to be a venue to enhance your kid’s exprience in a world that runs differently than theirs. My hope is that world stops referring to neurodivergence (and your child) as something to be fixed. No root cause for most of the disorders I evaluate has been identified and honestly I hope at some point it is no longer called “a disorder”. They are unique traits some people have, and we should aim to understand those traits to integrate them into the world we all share. I have to state, as a medical professional in current times, that most of you did nothing to produce those traits and the root cause for their existence has not been linked to any single factor. My message to you, however , it is not about root causes. My message is , thank you for letting me spend time with your wonderful child. Not sure who labeled the testing materials but they should definitely become neuropsychologists. Glad to have clinicians that take my creative mess and turn it into a service.
