LIP ENHANCEMENT- Dr. Hal London

This is an example of freshly injected lips. Notice the injection marks( tiny red dots) and slight irregularity in the contour. These are both normal immediately after injection and tend to resolve after a week or so. Her photo from IG 10 months later is included.

I concentrated most of the filler in the central area of both her upper and lower lips creating what I call “Cherry Lips”. In this patient, it would be a mistake to extend the filler out to the sides, creating unattractive tube-like lips.” I gave her some lift in the Cupid’s bow area and added filler to the 2 lower lip tubercles.

My goal was to enhance her natural beauty
rather than change it.

LIP ENHANCEMENT 1-4-26- Dr. Hal London

Lips are my favorite procedure. Why? Because injecting lips takes considerable skill, finesse, and artistic sense. It’s much like sculpting, except I’m altering contour by adding something, and sculpting changes contours by taking something away.

Mechanics: It’s takes eye-hand coordination. Filler is injected with my right thumb and thumb pressure can be varied. Lots of pressure and lots of gel squirts out, little pressure and nothing comes out. Also, while I’m injecting, my hand is moving, usually backwards. The faster I move, the less filler is laid down per measured distance given the same thumb pressure. It’s similar to putting icing on a cake with a squeeze bag.

So how do I know what thumb pressure to use and how fast my hand should be moving? Same answer to these questions: which filler do you use?, how much do you put in the top lip versus the bottom lip?,how do I know how to inject lips that are thinner?, How do you keep the lips from looking weird or strange?, and many more questions.

FACIAL REJUVENATION OVER 11 YEARS - Dr. Hal London

She has been my patient since 2014. She comes to see me for touch ups about 1-2 times per year. She has had no other treatments.

The first unfiltered photo is from our first visit, the other photo was taken this year. My photo technique has changed over the decade but you can still see the changes.
Mid and lower face volume was restored, lip lines improved, and lip shape more defined.

Faces age in predictable patterns. Volume loss causes sagging, folds, and wrinkles. Motion, especially around the mouth causes etched lines. These all can be reversed and the improvements sustained with regular maintenance.

The skill comes in understanding the changes and knowing how to offset them without making my patients look done or weird.

CUSTOMER SERVICE - Dr. Hal London

Almost any medical procedure can have complications. What's most important is that a patient has easy access to their doctor should problems arise.

COMMON SCENARIO: A patient has a complication from a procedure. They call their doctor's office, and a phone receptionist or answering service receives the call.

Patient: "Hello, my name is Worrie DeSick, and I just had a procedure with Dr. Una Vailable. I'm having a problem."
RECEPTIONIST: "I'm sorry about that. I will have Dr. Vailable's nurse call you back." Ms. DeSick waits all day, then receives a call back after 5 pm by the nurse who, after her explanation of the problem, offers: NURSE: "Sorry to hear you're having a problem, but I really can't give you any advice. Doesn't sound too concerning though. I will tell the doctor, and he'll call you back tomorrow." Worrie DeSick has to remain worried sick for another 16+ hours before she can speak to the doctor.

WHAT HAPPENS IN MY PRACTICE

Ms. DeSick has a problem. She has white bumps on her skin 2 days after her laser. She has been following the written instructions I personally handed her after the procedure. She has been using Aquaphor healing ointment regularly on her skin, just like I asked her to.

She calls. I answer from my business phone number. ME: "London Medical Spa, may I help you?" Ms. DeSick expresses her surprise and appreciation that she's able to speak to me directly with just one phone call. She then tells me about her problem. ME: "Can you send me a photo?" She sends one while we're still on the phone. She says she's been following all the instructions, and I believe her. ME: "Don't worry, Worrie. It's no biggie, just an acne-like breakout from the occlusive ointment. Stop the ointment, switch to a quality moisturizer, and let's see how it looks in 2 days. Send me a photo then, please."

Done. She spoke to me, and she's been reassured that it's not going to be a problem. She has a treatment plan and a follow-up. She's no longer worried. All with a five-minute phone call.

Customer service still matters. We're all time-pressured. Life is full of problems. We all want problems dealt with directly and in short order. I treat patients like I want to be treated.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET A CO2 LASER TREATMENT? - Dr. Hal London

Quick answer: It depends.

First, why do you want a laser treatment? If you have extensive sun damage, heavy, wrinkling, many dark spots, and excessive skin laxity, you are a good candidate. Patients with these complaints warrant an aggressive CO2 laser as shown in the photos presented today. I like to do aggressive laser treatments on my patients once or twice a year.

If your skin is basically in good shape and you want to keep it that way, first start with daily sunscreen and physical sunscreens, like hats, shade, umbrellas, etc. The next is to add a retinol at night. An inexpensive way to do this is to use Differin acne cream before bed. To maximize your skin health, I like to do mild intensity laser treatments four times a year. I use my same carbon dioxide laser, but adjust the settings to provide a sunburn like injury that heals in one to two days. I call this my London Laser Peel.

I laser my own face lightly a couple times a year and I can see the positive results.

Whether I am lasering a face aggressively or lightly the process is the same except in degree. Your skin has an amazing ability to heal itself. By creating a controlled injury, the laser treatment, your body launches a healing response which sheds surface layers and builds new tissue, essentially resurfacing the skin. This new skin has improved pigment, texture, light reflection, and glow.

GOOD NEWS : Laser is also effective on dark spots off the face. I laser a good number of arms and hands of Floridians who have enjoyed too much sun over the years.

LASER RESURFACING- Dr. Hal London

I did the same aggressive CO2 laser on her a few years ago and she wanted another one!

This lovely lady has been my regular patient for nearly 10 years. I keep her looking beautifully natural even after many of my varied treatments. She's a testament to my ability to keep facial aging in check without making a patient look overdone or wierd.

Laser resurfacing is a powerful tool for facial rejuvenation. It lifts dark spots, tightens skin, eliminates fine lines, and gives the skin a glow. An aggressive CO2 laser will remove years of sun damage in just one treatment.

In spite of 20 years of new machines and technologies, with their accompanying hype, the CO2 laser is still the gold standard for skin resurfacing. I use a fractional CO2 laser, which allows for a much faster healing time. In fact, I performed her laser on Thursday and she was back at work with makeup on by Tuesday of the next week. Incredible.

NOW IS THE TIME- Dr. Hal London.

Christmas is 10 days away. That's enough time for post-filler treatment swelling and bruising, if it occurs, to resolve. In 10 days, your Dysport should be working its magic. In 10 days your peel or laser will have healed nicely and your skin should look incredible for Christmas. Yep, ten days is ideal, but you could probably get your treatments this week and still be fine for the holidays.

It’s been a fabulous year for my practice here on Amelia Island. I want to personally thank all my new and loyal patients for making 2025 great.

DO I USE PRP TO MAINTAIN AND IMPROVE MY HAIR? Of course, wouldn’t you ? -Dr. Hal London

Hair loss( alopecia) is very common. There are many causes but most often it’s androgenetic( inherited due to male hormones in both males and females).

Androgenetic alopecia can be inherited from your father or mother. My mom’s brother started in his 30s. I noticed my own hair thinning in my 20s. Men get male-pattern baldness. This is seen as temple recession and thinning of the crown which progresses to the familiar bald on top with hair only on back and sides. Female-pattern androgenetic alopecia is typically more diffuse with widening of the part and general thinning.

It’s a big problem. Who doesn’t care how they look? Who wants to look older ?

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR HAIR IS THINNING

1. Find out why- maybe it’s your heredity, but maybe it’s something else. Take some time, read about alopecia from reputable sources.
Make a consult with a hair specialist.

2. Consider how stress or stressful events are contributing to your hair thinning.

3. Are you getting enough sleep?

4. Are you getting enough protein in your diet? Are you iron deficient?

5. Have you tried minoxidil 5% lotion or foam? It’s generic, inexpensive, and available without prescription at Walmart( equate brand) and many other places. It’s FDA approved and believe me, it works for both men and women.

6. Have you heard of PRP? PRP stands for platelet rich plasma. It’s a medical procedure performed by doctors. It involves using your own blood to harvest growth factors. These growth factors are injected back into the scalp to turn on resting hair follicles. This can grow and maintain hair density.

I used PRP to restore my own hair. It worked for me! “No, S.R. it’s not a wig”😂

LIP ENHANCEMENT BEFORE AND AFTER- Dr. Hal London

Lip enhancement is one my favs. To me, lips are the most beautiful part of the female face. Why? The shape, proportion and fine details are very unique to each patient. This affords me the opportunity to literally sculpt with fillers and create something quite beautiful.

Not only are lips visibly pleasing, lips are crucial for smiling, talking, and expressing emotions. Your lips visually and funtionally project much of who you are.

Did you know that lips offer an evolutionary benefit? Fuller lips suggest youth and vitality. They signal fertility and mating advantage. It’s no mystery why so many women like lip stick and lip filler.

Case analysis

These unfiltered photos show how adding a small amount of filler can make some nice changes. Respecting and enhancing natural contours really helps to create a natural look.

Please study the before and after treatment photos presented today.

Notice the lower lip. I created a subtle cleft in the middle allowing her newly shaped cupids bow of the upper lip to sit in beautifully. This provides light reflection from the lower lip’s two tubercles. Also note how the lower lip is more full centrally and tapers toward the mouth corners. Lovely.

Notice how I, ever so slightly, enlarged the upper lip but still kept the lower lip proportionately larger. She is a petite Caucasian female and her lower lip should be bigger naturally. Knowing normal anatomy matters.

Overall, think abstractly, can you see how the lips appear to open up like a flower in spring after the filler treatment? Pretty heady stuff but thats what I see.

LOWER FACE - Dr. Hal London

Your face projects who you are to others. This is especially true for the lower face.

Please study the before-treatment photo. What does her resting face say to you? To me, she looks a bit sad. She has been coming to me for nearly four years, and I assure you, she is a happy, upbeat person. Her face should reflect that, but due to predictable age-related changes, there is a disconnect between her mood and her facial projection.

What is it that gives her the sad look? Easy: it's due to the mouth corners dropping, extending into marionette lines, and the chin flattening and broadening.

Now, study the post-treatment photo. Happier, yes? More contented, yes? More pleasing to look at? I think so. Her resting face looks younger, all without looking fake or overdone 👏👏👏👏

What you don't see is how additionally treating the mid-face contributed to creating a more heart-shaped face. It's a subtle thing, but real.
