🚨 The Pitt Spoiler Alert 🚨

In a recent episode of the award-winning medical drama The Pitt, clinicians struggled to get leads to adhere to a patient’s back.

A familiar challenge. A familiar solution.

So they reached for “the sticky stuff.”

From the big screen to real life, Mastisol is the clinically proven “sticky stuff” clinicians rely on to adhere dressings, tapes, and devices—when adhesion actually matters.

🔥 Closing out IV Nurses Week with a focus on protecting patients’ skin.

The INS Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice note that enhanced dressing securement requires additional precautions during removal to minimize the risk of skin injury.

They’re not alone! ISPAD recommends Detachol for safe removal of adhesive CGM devices, and ECRI listed proper removal as a key strategy for reducing MARSI in their 2025 Health Technology Hazard report.

Detachol is designed to complement the dressing care process — providing thoughtful, safe removal so you can choose the appropriate securement and dressing to keep the insertion site protected.

The INS 2024 Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice emphasize the importance of assessing vascular access sites and dressing integrity to reduce complications like CLABSI and hospital-onset bacteremia (HOB).

Regular assessment, collaborative rounding, and audit & feedback are key strategies for improving practice and patient outcomes. Part of this includes evaluating whether adjuncts like gum mastic adhesive (Mastisol) are helping maintain dressing integrity post-implementation.

As INS notes, understanding your process measures—not just outcome measures—is critical. Tracking dressing integrity ensures interventions actually make a difference.

🔥 It’s IV Nurses Week — and today we’re focusing on catheter securement.

The INS Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice emphasize that VADs must be securely stabilized to prevent dislodgement and movement at the insertion site without hindering assessment or therapy delivery (Standard 36).

SecurAcath, a subcutaneous anchor securement system (SASS), is a standards‑supported option that stabilizes catheters throughout dwell time, reducing the risks of migration and early removal.

Important: Sutures are not recommended for securement, as they increase the risk of needlestick injuries, support biofilm growth, and may contribute to catheter-associated bloodstream infections.
