The Detroit Institute of Arts’ Inside Out Program transforms everyday spaces into open-air galleries and this year, Henry Ford Macomb Hospital is one of them! 🎨

We recently welcomed seniors from the Clinton Township Senior Center for a docent-led tour of the 7 art installations across our hospital's campus. They heard the stories and history behind pieces like Bank of the Ocean by Vincent Van Gogh, Noah’s Ark: Genesis by Charles McGee and On the Nile by Sanford Robinson Gifford.

After the tour, attendees explored parts of the hospital and learned more about our services close to home. We’re grateful to partner with the DIA to bring art, connection and inspiration to our community.💙

Henry Ford Hospital recently welcomed back the 1975 graduating class from our Henry Ford School of Nursing and Hygiene for their 50th reunion! 💙 As the 50th class to graduate, this milestone also marked 100 years since the former school’s first graduating class.

The nurses toured our advanced intensive care units and the Sladen Library, and visited where they once lived in Clara Ford Pavilion on our Detroit campus. The group especially enjoyed seeing their old mailboxes and reminiscing about the “good old days” while looking through historical photos!

We're honored to celebrate this incredible group of nurses and the legacy they represent in our history of care and education.

When Heather Holihan got the call she had breast cancer, she was on her way to an Adam Sandler stand-up comedy show. “I immediately went into panic mode and began hysterically crying,” she says. “After a few minutes, I thought I had 2 choices. I could let this ruin my plans and the results will not change or I could still go and try to have the best time. I laughed a lot and it’s what I needed to take my mind off the diagnosis at least temporarily.”

Then it was time for 45-year-old Heather to get to work. Upon the advice of our primary care physician Dr. Christina Blake, she underwent genetic testing. It revealed she carried a RECQL gene mutation that increased her risk of recurrence.

Heather then met with our breast cancer surgeon Dr. Laura Dalla Vecchia, who provided guidance on surgical options. Heather chose to undergo a bilateral mastectomy – where both breasts are removed. This would be followed by a DIEP flap breast reconstruction, which uses your own skin, fat and blood vessels from your lower abdomen to reconstruct your breasts.

This procedure has a low risk for infection, says Dr. Dunya Attisha, our director of microsurgery and breast reconstruction, and there’s less maintenance down the road like there is with implants. The overall satisfaction with this type of breast reconstruction tends to be highest of all of the options.

“A friend who also underwent breast cancer surgery was shocked at how natural my breasts looked after the procedure,” Heather says. “I’m very thankful that after the 1-month recovery, my life is pretty much back to normal other than follow-up appointments.”

Now Heather’s able to spend time with her nieces and nephews and enjoy life with her partner – and she credits her team for making that possible. “From Dr. Blake who guided me with outstanding referrals to Dr. Dalla Vecchia who held my hand and wiped my tears as I was wheeled into the surgical suite to Dr. Attisha who was so thorough and compassionate, I could not have picked a better team to manage my care.”
