Diabetes can damage the nerves in the feet, causing loss of sensation. This is known as diabetic neuropathy and can make it difficult to feel pain, heat, or cold in the feet. As a result, diabetics may not notice if they have a cut or blister on their foot, which can lead to infections.
Diabetes also affects blood flow to the feet. Poor circulation means that any foot injuries or infections may take longer to heal, increasing the risk of complications.
