"I'M TRIGGERED"
How often do we hear this phrase – facetiously or not?

But truthfully, there are a few things about the equestrian/horse world that trigger me. 😡

1️⃣ What's accepted as good "desensitization" training or "normal" colt-starting/horse breaking. I seriously just want to THROW my phone sometimes at the videos I see.

2️⃣ Excusing downright abusive "training techniques" in the name of establishing leadership and dominance to fix behaviors that are often the result of pain and/or fear. Kindness is free and EXTREMELY effective. Dominance theory is dead. Punishment only suppresses and does not fix. Often these techniques result in the horse only internalizing the extreme fear.

3️⃣ What's considered "normal" and acceptable living conditions for horses. Including the horses "treated like kings and queens". Let's revisit the five freedoms and look at what is appropriate for the species.

4️⃣ Poor fitting tack. It doesn't have to be custom, and it doesn't have to be expensive, to fit right.

Alright… now that I've gotten that off my chest. One thing I want to say is… as much as this stuff really gets to me sometimes. I also realize I DID ALL OF THAT. And in five years, I'll probably look back on some stuff I do now and wonder why I didn't know better. 🤦

It's the natural progression of learning and life. The important thing is that we are trying, we are learning, and we have grace for that learning process. 📚

AND… that when we see other people doing something we don't agree with, we have grace for them too! We don't punish them for trying, we encourage discussions, and we reinforce progress! This is IMPORTANT.

Honestly, the equestrian community is toxic enough. Let's try and change that.

Complaining about a horse’s behavior-

We all are guilty. And the frustration can be palpable: you have a horse behaving in ways you don’t understand, don’t know how to fix, feel scared by or frustrated by.

Where this becomes unhelpful is in the daily practice of these same behaviors, humans tend to attach labels to the horse’s character. “He’s such a fruitcake,” “she is witchy,” “he’s a bird brain,” and other naughty things for humans to say. Why are these harmful? Because a) they describe a feeling the horse is experiencing, not the horse’s character. If the feeling or behavior is repeated daily, we have only to look to the conditions and handling that create that behavior and reinforce it, or don’t support it’s change.

B ) it is harmful because it takes the responsibility away from the human with the powers of logic and reasoning, big thinking brain, ability to look up answers on the internet, reach out for help, go to clinics, take lessons and so on-

And puts it on the 1200 lb flight animal with a 1 lb brain who can’t simply get up and leave to another barn where his needs will be met.

I know complaining about behavior can relieve stress. But if you find yourself making the same comments day in and day out, ask yourself why- why is this horse spooky, cranky, pushy or whatever? And remember that the natural state for a horse is homeostasis, and not one of these descriptors is his personality.

This guy here had a few issues going on! He was struggling with backing and stopping as well as being overly anxious (more than his normal). I finally remembered to take pics with this guy and I'm so glad I did! It's no wonder he wasn't backing straight. He couldn't! They show quite a dramatic difference. Photos on the left are before myofascial release treatment. Photos on the right are after 2 sessions within a week.
He's now happy to back up and stop straighter as well as being able to relax into his exercises more.

This, you guys, has been my “go to” for myself. Yes, there has been wonderful hands on ways of healing for myself and really great mindset and journaling exercises that I have done but Wings has been a huge part of me being able to make the shifts within my energy body in order to manifest those shifts without and implement the change in the physical.

When I first came across this method, I was single-again, living in a camp trailer, working 3 part time jobs just to be able to feed myself and my horse (yes, anyone who knows me, I kept my horse!) and buy enough propane to keep me from freezing to death in the winter months. I had just come out of another horrible relationship and I was so done with that whole scene because I felt like I just kept attracting people who weren’t good for me. I felt stupid. I felt like a loser.

My coworker invited me to go to a group Wings session with her.
It was $15 and I was pretty much broke.
I went anyway.
Each one of us there got to work on one thing of our choice. One issue.

Y’all! It made a big enough impact that first night that I made it priority to go to every group session for almost a year. I will forever be grateful to my mentor, Julie, for showing up like clockwork for our group. It got me to focus inward, on me, in a supporting loving way. It provided a way for me to let go of the patterns and attachments keeping me in dysfunctional relationship cycles.

I later had the opportunity to have a full session with Julie and, I kid you not, 2 days after that session is when I met my now husband, Boyd. That, my friends, is only just the beginning of my Wings journey.

It was powerful!

I took a chance and chose into my own healing on a deep level. Wings allowed me to run with it!

Recent studies conducted by the Institute of Heart-Math provide a clue to explain the two-way ′′ healing ′′ that occurs when we're close to horses. According to researchers, the heart has an electromagnetic field larger than the brain: a magnetometer can measure the energy field of the heart that radiates from 2.4 meters to 3 meters around the human body. While this is certainly significant, perhaps more impressive than the electromagnetic field projected by the heart of a horse is five times larger than that of a human being (imagine an electromagnetic sphere around the horse) and it can influence straight into our own heart rate.

Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a ′′ coherent ′′ heart rate (heart rate pattern) that explains why we can ′′ feel better ′′ when we're close to them. Studies have found a coherent heart pattern or HRV to be a solid measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy-that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.

A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adapt to stressful situations very efficiently. Many times, we just need to be in the presence of horses to feel a sense of well-being and peace. In fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits by interacting with horses, including lower blood pressure and heart rate, higher beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters acting as pain suppressors), decreased stress levels, decreased feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, better social working; and greater feelings of empowerment, confidence, patience and self-efficacy ".
