Today was my annual trip to Jefferson City to advocate for quality care for our Elders. This year I joined the Missouri Alliance for Long Term Care Reform. Today’s group consisted of direct care providers, Ombudsmen, families of loved ones that had once lived in long term care facilities, and people like myself that want to see a change in how we care for this vulnerable population. The plea from families and the stories shared by direct care providers, not only brought tears to my eyes, but reminded me of why I do what I do each day as the owner of a small home.
The news release that was revealed today was devastating, but not shocking, and exposes critical issues affecting over 8,000 residents in 68 troubled skilled nursing facilities across the state. Issues including chronic understaffing, financial mismanagement, and regulatory failures. Missouri, we have a lot of changes to make in how we care for our Elders.
Our ask: Increased Ombudsman funding, more transparency and ownership accountability, and more frequent surveys.
My ask: That one day, Missouri will have more small homes like The Collins House where Elders are cared for in a home setting the way they deserve.
