As we approach the New Year, let's not set ourselves up for failure with punishing goals or deadlines that we know we really can't make or that we'll hate while we attempt it before giving up after a few weeks.

Incremental changes in lifestyle are much easier to handle and will get the benefits you want more consistently. Rather than, "I'm going to workout every day!" or "I'm gonna never eat sugar again!" why not just make a small change that will help you get to the eventual goal you have like working out a lot more or eating much better?

A couple things to consider: sugar is a major inflammatory agent. It will create more damaging pathologies for you than just about anything we normally eat. It sets you up for diabetes, autoimmune disease, plaquing in your arteries, and so much more. Achy joints? Cut back on your sugar intake. Tough time sleeping? Cut back on your sugar intake. Tired all day? Cut back on your sugar intake. Trust me, you'll thank me for it later.

What about sleep? We need 7-9 hours every day. We need a rhythm to help us sleep better. That means going to sleep about the same time every night, whether you need to get to bed or not. It means putting your phone down AT LEAST 30 min before if not 2 hours before you go to bed. No caffeine in the evening. Blue light will stimulate you, so avoiding it will help calm you down. Maybe a nice herbal tea and reading a little before you go to bed will help.

Get outside and enjoy nature. Be outside. It's been shown to reduce stress hormones and relax us.

Try these tips out and see how it develops over the next few months. Planning on eating a little better over time is easier to keep up than cutting everything out that's not good for you all at once. Going from no work out to working out for 20 min a day 3 days a week is easier to keep doing than killing yourself with a new gym membership 6 days a week for an hour at a time. You can build up to that if you really want to, but if you start there you'll likely feel so terrible and overwhelmed with the time commitment that you'll quit pretty early.

Our Story

Dr. Steve and Michelle Risner, with their family, have been in independent practice for over 10 years providing northwest Ohio with the NUCCA technique—the technique developed and endorsed by the National Upper Cervical Chiropractor Association. Dr. Steve first practiced in Seattle, Washington, with Dr. Lee Yardley. Dr. Yardley’s dedication to teaching and advancing the NUCCA technique provided a great opportunity for Dr. Steve to learn all he could before opening his own practice in Findlay. The Risner Spinal Center is truly a family practice as Dr. Steve, his wife, Michelle, and their children are always present at the office. Ranging from 1 to 12 years in age, their 5 children certainly change the atmosphere of their practice.
