Coming in the top spot for 2025 reported dog pet poison incidents was Chocolate🍫

Alternate Names for Chocolate: chocolate-covered espresso beans, milk chocolate, Baker's chocolate, white chocolate, dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, cocoa mulch, cacao mulch, cocoa hull, caffeine, theobromine, methylxanthine, xanthine, cocoa powder, chocolate candy, Halloween candy, Easter candy, Valentine’s Day Candy, Christmas candy, Hanukkah candy

Why is Chocolate Toxic?
Chocolate contains chemicals called methylxanthines, specifically theobromine and caffeine. Ingestion in toxic amounts can result in vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, elevated heart rate, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures, and possibly even death (though death is rare in pets who receive prompt and appropriate treatment). Dogs make up 95% of our chocolate calls, as cats are usually too discriminating to eat large amounts of chocolate.

Coming in at number 2 for the most reported dog pet poison incident of 2025 was grape🍇

Alternate Names for Grapes:
Vitis, raisins, currants, sultanas

Why are Grapes Toxic?
Ingestion of even a small amount of grapes, raisins, or currants can result in severe, acute kidney failure. Most, if not all, products that contain grapes or raisins may cause toxicity – this includes grape juice, trail mix with raisins, raisin bread, and possibly even wine. Additionally, some cookies and bars (including protein and snack bars) may contain raisin paste and some breads contain raisin juice. All grapes and raisins, seeded and seedless, organic and conventionally grown, can cause toxicity. The exact way these foods cause toxicity is still unknown and toxicity does not necessarily appear to be dose dependent. This unknown toxin can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, anorexia, and acute renal (kidney) failure.

Coming in at number 3 for the most reported dog pet poison incident of 2025 was Bromethalin🐀

There are no alternative names for Bromethalin. This chemical can be found in many rodenticide products.

Why is Bromethalin Toxic to Dogs?
It causes swelling of the brain by interfering with normal cell function. Depending on the amount ingested, the main clinical signs of bromethalin poisoning include lethargy (sluggishness), weakness, hindlimb paralysis, difficulty walking (ataxia), tremors and seizures. Immediate medical care is key when it comes to bromethalin exposure.

Coming in at number 4 for the most reported dog pet poison incident of 2025 was Xylitol🧁

Xylitol is a low‑calorie sugar substitute used in many “sugar‑free” or “low‑calorie” products. It’s safe for people, but dogs process it very differently. The trouble with Xylitol is that it can be found in thousands of products including but not limited to gum, peanut butter, cough syrups, vitamins, toothpaste, and skin care products.

Why is Xylitol Toxic to Dogs?
Xylitol is absorbed very quickly, causing a sudden surge of insulin that can drop a dog's blood sugar to dangerously low levels. This can lead to vomiting, weakness, tremors, seizures, or collapse. With larger amounts, xylitol can also damage the liver and cause acute liver failure within a day or two. Any exposure is considered an emergency because symptoms can escalate fast and become life‑threatening.

Last week we challenged you to guess sweet Nicholas' breeds and now it's time to see how you did!!!

DRUM ROLL PLEASE...

Nicholas is an adorable mash up of hound and working dog. His three breeds are Great Pyrenees, Bloodhound, and American Fox Hound.

The Great Pyrenees is a majestic, slow‑moving cloud of a dog who was bred to watch over flocks in the mountains — and they’ve never forgotten it. Calm, steady, and quietly confident, they patrol their home with the serene energy of someone who has been doing this job for a few thousand years.

They’re famously gentle with their families, especially kids, and they carry themselves with a kind of old‑soul wisdom. Independent thinkers by nature, they like to consider your requests before deciding if they agree — not stubborn, just thoughtful. Their glorious coats shed generously, and they’re known to alert you to anything they deem noteworthy, from a visitor to a slightly suspicious breeze.

In short: a noble, affectionate mountain guardian wrapped in a fluffy coat, devoted to keeping their world safe and peaceful.

How did you do? Did you guess any of Nicholas' breeds???

If you've done a DNA test on your pet and would like to have your pet featured in a future Super Sleuth post, please email or text your pet's DNA results and a few clear pet photos to Rolling Hills Animal Hospital! We'd love to feature you!

Coming in at number 5 for the most reported dog pet poison incident of 2025 was onions🧅

Alternate Names:
Allium, Alliaceae, chives, leeks, disulfides, thiosulfates, garlic, garlic powder, onion powder, dehydrated onions

Why is Onions Toxic to Dogs?
Onions are toxic to dogs because they contain compounds that damage red blood cells, making them fragile and prone to bursting. This can lead to anemia, weakness, pale gums, and lethargy. Signs don’t always appear right away—symptoms may be delayed for several days. All forms count, including raw, cooked, powdered, and dehydrated onions, and some breeds (like Akitas and Shiba Inus) are even more sensitive.
