The wonderful time of year is arriving with colors, bells, sights, and smells; the holiday season is upon us which can bring a tidal wave of toys and treats. You may be wondering what to get your child that will help them learn and grow or you may have many people asking for a list, and you are stumped. Learning toys, activities, games, and books are a great way to help your child grow and develop.

With all the options out there finding the perfect holiday surprise that checks the box of helping your child and is also fun can be a challenge! This year we are going to set out to help you find some ideas for your children that will help them grow and develop that they will love, and you will feel good about because you know it is helping them!

We will be sharing some of our Ideas for the next several weeks as well as having a Christmas List Creation Event Saturday Novembe 23 9am-2pm open house style. Come and play with toys, drink cocoa, eat cookies, and meet Santa in a sensory friendly environment!.

I love doing themes! Some are easy and intuitive for holidays and seasons. Some are common, dogs, cats, picnic, beach, vehicles. And some are led by your clients interest, a few friends have been asking for Axolotl week for over a year! I finally made it happen with a puzzle, crafts, slime find, and an epic sensory bin!!! My job is the best!!

We all hear the word sensory every day. Classrooms are sensory friendly, zoos and museums have sensory friendly days and times or stations, OTs work on sensory development. We hear it a lot because it is important. This is how we reset our brain from stress, anxiety, and life in general. We need to engage our sensory systems especially in busy seasons!

The really awesome thing about sensory is it is everywhere and does not have to be hard. Let your kids climb and jump off steps or small ledges. Do a dance party for a whole song. Draw with sidewalk chalk to get the feedback of the rough ground. Go to a splash park and feel the water, chase the water, and hear the water. Go to the creek for some creek stomping. Roll down a hill. Go for a bike ride. 10-30 minutes and your body is good to go often for several days.

Today in the clinic we changed it up and went outside for a sensory reset. Returning we found a happier and calmer kid and therapist! It doesn’t take much just get your senses going!!

Words cannot express what joy Sensory MVP Summer Camp brings to the office! The smiles, laughs, friendships, crafts, games, and joy were incredible to watch. The most special part about being part of the The Marriage and Family Clinic of Central Indiana is the families and lives we get to join in with and affect.

Summer camp will be back next year with more offerings, games, crafts, and joy. In the mean time if your family needs support please reach out to the The Marriage and Family Clinic of Central Indiana for counseling, play therapy, parent coaching, OT, or speech Therapy!
