As a pediatric SLP and a parent of young children, I feel so strongly about this (and have since the beginning). There is zero hard data on the short term or long term effects of social-emotional development (a hot topic right now), or on the effect of speech, receptive and expressive language, and pragmatic language development when visually impeded by face coverings as well as the auditory distortion of speech sounds when others’ faces and voices are covered. My entire career (20 years) has centered around having babies, toddlers, and children needing to reference my face for shared attention and emotional regulation, facial expressions and affect, sound production, auditory processing abilities, and just simply being a friendly, loving face for children to relate to. The fact that we are almost two years into this nonsense is just absurd and the ones who pay the price are the children. 💔

The educational cost of face coverings is far better established than the benefits of mandates.
