According to Healthline - Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is most common in adults over 50 but can also affect younger people.

The risk of developing PAD is four times higher for people who smoke than for nonsmokers.

Peripheral Arterial Disease is a type of Peripheral Vascular Disease.

PAD is a circulatory condition that causes a narrowing of the arteries. It can lead to poor circulation in your extremities, typically the legs. In an associated condition called atherosclerosis, arteries stiffen due to plaque buildup in the arteries and blood vessels. Both conditions decrease blood flow to your extremities and can result in pain.
Reduced blood flow in your extremities can cause:

- numbness and tingling
- weakness
- pain
- swelling

In time, it can lead to nerve and tissue damage.

Without treatment, reduced blood flow and plaque in your carotid arteries may result in a stroke. Your carotid arteries are the major blood vessels that deliver blood to your brain. If plaque builds up in the arteries of your heart, you’re at risk of having a heart attack.

Women often ask us how their period will change after they have Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). Your first menstruation after Uterine Fibroid Embolization is usually better, but that is not always the case.

By your second cycle, it will be better, and then your third one will be even better.

It can take some time for the volume of bleeding to decrease with each cycle. Eventually, your menstruation becomes regular and much lighter. Additionally, patients begin to notice a decrease in uterus size.

The American Heart Association shares an article on food insecurity linked to increased heart risks for people with Peripheral Artery Disease.

Here are a few highlights of their article:
✔️ People with Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) who live in a food desert, which is a community with low levels of access to retail outlets selling healthy and affordable foods, were 17% more likely to experience death, heart attack, or stroke compared with those who had adequate access to healthy, nutrition-rich food.
✔️ People with PAD living in food deserts were less likely to have a car and more likely to be Black or Hispanic, live in urban areas, and have chronic kidney disease, Type 2 diabetes, or high blood pressure.
✔️ Women with PAD were less likely to receive optimal medical treatment and more likely to be diagnosed with malnutrition and other chronic health conditions regardless of food access.

Pedal loop interventions can help with limb salvage and limb preservation in patients with non-healing wounds due to diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and other conditions. The pedal loop consists of arteries in the foot that are responsible for supplying blood to the toes and the heel. Patients with blockages in the pedal loop due to diabetes and other conditions can develop wounds, ulcers, or gangrene that don’t heal without restoring blood flow.

While not every person needs a pedal loop intervention, there are certain individuals for whom this type of intervention is extremely important in order to provide the best results, especially when the wounds don’t heal. Most notably, it is a procedure that not many interventionalists are comfortable performing due to the small diameter of these arteries.
