Wondering what you can do to help your uterus heal, as a part of your postpartum recovery? Here are a few things...

1. Breast/chest/bodyfeeding releases Oxytocin which contracts the uterus, bringing it back down to the optimal size.

2. Drink lots and lots of water!

3. Avoid stairs and lifting until cleared by care provider.

4. Warm compresses on abdomen.

5. Gentle massage on lower abdomen.

6. Belly wraps.

It’s world doula week! I just wanted to take a moment and say thank you to all the families that have welcomed me into their lives. It’s such an honor to do this work and I am grateful every day. ❤️

The anesthesia used during a cesarian can sometimes cause baby to be drowsy and/or uninterested in nursing right away. Studies have shown that nursing in the first hour after birth, often called the "golden hour", is associated with prolonged duration of breast/chest/body feeding as well as a steep reduction in infant mortality. With the right help and guidance most people who deliver via cesarian can successfully feed their baby within the first hour of life.

Maslow was a psychologist who introduced the concept of the hierarchy of human needs as something that underpins motivation. This hierarchy suggests that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs. More info about Maslow's Hierarchy for new moms.

Postpartum depression (PPD)
is a complex mix of physical, emotional, and behavioral changes that happen in some women after giving birth. According to the DSM-5, a manual used to diagnose mental disorders, PPD is a form of major depression that begins within 4 weeks after delivery. Many birthing people also experience postpartum anxiety as well or in addition to postpartum depression. So what can you do?

ASK FOR HELP!

Whatever this looks like for you. Meal trains, someone to watch the baby so you can nap, lactation support, help with household chores, ask a friend over for tea (this period can feel isolating so make sure you have adult interactions). If you don't have a big support team, hire someone! Postpartum doulas like myself look for symptoms of postpartum mood disorders and help you find solutions. We help meal plan, make sure you get a nap, offer emotional support, organize your meal train, fold your laundry while we chat, offer lactation support, whatever we can do to help make the transition easier. Whether it's your first baby or your fifth, I am here to offer my support and love. Reach out to schedule a free consultation!

A birth plan is a list of your preferences relating to the hospital environment, your medical options, and the immediate care of your newborn

I will work with you to create a birth plan that meets you where you are at, takes all of your needs into consideration, and protects the sanctity of your birthing space. Reach out for a free consultation today!

How long should I breastfeed?

*Ultimately this is a VERY personal choice with many factors to be considered. Don't ever let anyone persuade you to stop before you are ready or to continue past the point you want to stop. You will know best!*

Historically, until relatively recently, “extended” – or to better describe it “full-term” – breastfeeding was the cultural norm. According to anthropologist Kathy Dettwyler, in societies where children are allowed to nurse as long as they want, self-weaning usually happens between 3 and 4 years of age. Her research on breastfeeding duration in non-human primates (based on a number of variables such as length of gestation, weight gain, age at sexual maturity and dental eruption) places the natural duration of breastfeeding in modern humans between 2.5 and 7 years.
