It’s been an amazing 10 years, Flagstaff. Due to circumstances beyond our control, Red Door Acupuncture will be closing its doors August 30th, almost 10 years to the day that Richelle and I took it over.

The clinic doors are closing, but I will still be in Flagstaff! I’m excited to announce that I will be practicing out of two locations, and !

That’s it. That’s the whole message.

A pretty common question.

Orthopedic acupuncture is a specialized branch of acupuncture that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions. It involves the application of acupuncture techniques to address issues related to the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other structures of the musculoskeletal system.

In orthopedic acupuncture, my job is to find pain generators, with the goal to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, promote natural healing processes, and improve overall musculoskeletal function.

Its a process

One good workout won’t make you strong. Stretching once doesn’t improve mobility. Nothing in life happens after a single encounter. It takes time, it takes consistency, and it takes patience.

Most research recommends acupuncture 2-3 times a week for the best possible outcome. Most folks can get away with once a week.

The vast majority, can’t get away with just one treatment.

So, if you’re new to acupuncture, expect that it may take some time to see significant change. If you’ve had acupuncture in the past, but only went once and got no result, it may be time to try again.

It’ll probably be fine.

I’m sure it will go away if I just rest it.

I hope it goes away on its own.

Sound familiar? How many times do we put off something small that snowballs into something large down the line? Instead of addressing the situation when it was small and more manageable, we put it off until it starts to take control of our lives, after it starts to suck.

Pain is your body’s alarm system. It lets you know there is smoke in the house and a fire that needs to be put out. It is a lot easier to address pain when its low-grade, or even just a tightness or lack of mobility than when its a full-blown injury.

There are, of course, many avenues to address low-grade pain or discomfort: Lifting weights, yoga, mobility work, meditation and breath work, and, yes, acupuncture.

This is the core of preventative medicine: address the issue while its small, because things don’t have to suck before you make a change.

It doesn’t mask pain, it changes it.

By being able to directly interact with the nervous system, acupuncture can make change to pain generators, both at the site of pain, but also in regions and structures of the brain that relate to pain.

Why is that important? Because if we can support your body and help restore self-regulation of your nervous system, we create an optimal environment for healing.

So, if you feel limited in your mobility or hesitant to participate in activities that normally bring you joy, then acupuncture is an amazing tool to help your body do what it is designed to do: heal itself.

I’ve seen thousands of patients over the better part of a decade and one thing that unites my patients is that, for the ones that stick with it, their original pain subsides and they are more resilient to future injury later - either recovering faster or not being as hurt from future accidents.

My goal is to give you the longest amount of time possible feeling the best you possibly can. And that often starts with changing your pain.

The snow today is wet and heavy.

That means: take extra care when shoveling. The snow is heavier than it looks and the risk of pulling out your back is higher.

Snowstorms also see a spike in heart attacks from increased vigorous exercise. If you are shoveling snow, take your time and be sure to take breaks if you’re feeling tired. This also reduces the risk of injury from shoveling.

And of course, if you don’t have to drive today, don’t. If you do have to drive today, always plan extra time to get to your destination and go slow.

Other than that, enjoy this lovely, snowy Flagstaff day!

Because we all need the reminder from time to time.

Deep, long, slow breathing calms the nervous system, improves digestion, reduce tension in the body, and even reduce the perception of pain.

So take a minute and remember to breathe.

When is sciatica not sciatica?

When it is this guy and his bully friend, the glute medius.

Sciatica does often come from the spine and piriformis, another hip muscle, but glute minimus is not only commonly associated with sciatica-like symptoms, but usually totally overlooked. The joker getting away with the prank and someone else getting blamed.

This muscle is one that, in our modern age of sitting and movement in single planes (e.g. walking and running), tends to atrophy over time, losing strength and length in the process.

Glute minimus dysfunction can be fairly easily diagnosed through manual testing and observation and, if it is the root of your pain, responds well to treatment plus movement.

Tomorrow I will demonstrate my favorite glute minimus and medius stretches and stabilizing movements.
