Today is 立秋 Lìqiū literally translated as the ‘start of autumn”’ is the 13th solar term. Liqiu is the first of six phases that make the autumn season in East Asian cultures.
Over the next three months, the lush greenery of summer will gradually begin to fade. The temperature will drop and moisture will be squeezed out of the atmosphere. As the yang retreats cooling and drying the air, the land becomes more arid and the colors of autumn appear.
On an emotional level it is time to become more practical and less idealistic.
The quality associated with the midway point of all cycles, in this case the annual, is self-assurance born out of clear vision. This is the appropriate time of the year to reflect on the changes you will need to make over the next few months to realign with more purposeful and achievable goals.
Liqiu begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 135° (Mid-Leo) - August 7 and ends when it reaches the longitude of 150° (Start Virgo) August 23.

We align with nature by adapting our diet and eating cooling foods like tropical fruits, yogurt, and drinking peppermint tea. Less strenuous outdoor activity, midday rest and lazing around in the shade early afternoon are encouraged.
Psychologically, we become more introspective, attuning to our inner feelings, and rekindling the imagination. Allow yourself to daydream for just a few minutes every day. Today is 小满 Xiǎomǎn literally translated as ‘grain-full’ is the 8th solar term. The blazing sun of summer combines with rain to create an environment of heat and humidity.
‘Grain full’ is associated with ample rain, hence, the flat stem of rice gradually fills out, then the rice ripens according to location. Local differences are reflected in differing sayings:
“The rice stem fills out during Qingming (Apr 5), and the ear of rice buds in Guyu (Apr 20).” “Rice stem fills out during Xiaoman (May 21) and the ear of rice forms in Mangzhong (Jun 6).”
The key is to use the solar-nodes within your local area to describe natural phenomena, which reinforces our relationship with nature.
Grain Full is a time for growth but remember to relax and share a laugh with your friends/family/colleagues. It’s a good time to reflect on your youthful self, identifying those traits in others while understanding & appreciating how it serves as an essential developmental function toward maturity, or ‘ripeness’.
Grain-full begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 60° (start Gemini) - May 21 and ends when it reaches the longitude of 75° (middle Gemini) - June 5.

04/20/2025

Today is 谷雨 Gǔyù, literally translated as ‘Grain Rain’, is the 6th and final term of spring. The northern hemisphere temperatures rise dramatically during this period, bringing increasing amounts of moisture and rainfall. As the old saying goes,
‘It becomes cloudy when Grain Rain starts and it rains when summer begins’. ‘If you walk barefoot before Grain Rain the ground still feels cold. After Grain Rain, the ground feels comfortable without footwear.’
This rain is crucial for the earth and the harvest for humans. The spring rain is considered as precious as oil. Traditionally, the emperor’s role is to create an environment for harmony in the people and society. Then, as the leader and representative, he must submit himself with an authentic heart at the alter ceremonies. This is a ceremony to create harmony between humans and nature, and then nature will reward humans with harmony of seasons and weather. The ‘grain rains’ should arrive in this period. If the rain does not come, this reflects poorly on the emperor, and his leadership is in question.
It begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 30° (Ta**us) - April 20 and ends when it reaches the longitude of 45° - May 5.
