When working with powder, compounders use flow hoods (also called powder hoods), to protect pharmacy staff from contaminating the product. Powders are weighed and manipulated under the hood for each custom prepared medication.

Mortar and Pestle has two state of the art flow hoods to ensure the highest quality and safety for our customers and our staff! We spare no expense to make sure we are up to date with the highest standard compounding equipment.

How are troches made?

Troches are lozenges that are placed under the tongue or between the cheek and gum. They are designed to deliver drugs via buccal absorption. 

So how are they made? First the base must be melted at the appropriate temperature. The active ingredients are then added to the melted base, and mixed with a spin bar. Flavor is then added to make sure the troches taste good.

Once the mixture is homogenous, it is poured via syringe into a troche mold and left to cool. Once cooled, the troches are popped from the mold in their final form!

Troches are a great tool in hormone replacement therapy as well as ketamine therapy.

Do you know how capsules are made?

First, a pharmacist formulates the capsules based on the prescription and the patient’s needs.

The ingredients are then weighed out and mixed on a speciality acoustic mixing machine.

A trained technician then uses a capsule machine to encapsulate the powder, as seen in the photo above!

The capsules are then weighed to ensure accuracy and finally checked by the pharmacist.

This entire process happens for every compounded capsule at Mortar and Pestle!
