Callan Physical Therapy

Callan Physical Therapy Dixie Callan is a Board Certified Physical Therapist in the State of Arizona. She currently lives and works in Flagstaff, AZ.

She specializes in pelvic rehabilitation including urinary incontinence, vulvodynia, pelvic pain, prolapse, testicular pain and post prostatectomy rehab. Dixie has been practicing in the field of physical therapy since 2011 where she obtained her doctorate from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. She works at EntireCare Rehab & Sports Medicine. She is married to Tanner Callan, a firefighter for the City of Flagstaff. Together they have two incredible boys who love playing sports and going on adventures. Dixie enjoys the outdoors including boating, camping, hunting, skiing, hiking, kayaking and mountain biking. In 2016 Dixie started specializing in pelvic floor rehabilitation after 5 years of being in orthopedics as well spending time inpatient and working in the Emergency Department. This journey began in an effort to seek out further ways to help her patients with low back and sacroiliac joint pain. However, after becoming trained to perform internal pelvic exams and treatment she found a much broader application of this knowledge and sought to provide treatment beyond what was anticipated. Dixie began treating the male population after a gentleman was referred to her following a prostatectomy and suffered from urinary incontinence. Following this, Dixie put together a pre and post-prostatectomy rehab program and began treating this severely underserved population with great success. Unfortunately her reach has been only to Northern Arizona. Her desire is to provide this much needed education to both patients and clinicians nationally in order to expand her reach and share this knowledge with others. This page is purely for educational purposes, if you are seeking an in-person appointment please contact EntireCare at Northern Arizona Healthcare to schedule an appointment.

🌟 Prostatectomy Preparation: Tips from Your Physical Therapist 🌟

Hello everyone! As a physical therapist, I often assist patients who are preparing for prostatectomy surgery. It's important to enter this experience well-prepared, so I want to share some expert advice to help ensure a smooth surgery and recovery. Here’s what I recommend:

1. Consult Your Healthcare Team
Make sure you understand the surgical process, recovery expectations, and any risks involved. Discuss all your current medications and health concerns with your surgeon and primary care provider.

2. Plan for Post-Surgery Care
Arrange for assistance at home after your surgery. Recovery can be smoother when you have support with daily tasks and mobility.

3. Nutritional Considerations
A well-balanced diet is crucial for healing, but it’s also important to avoid foods and drinks that can irritate the bladder. Known bladder irritants include:

Caffeine (found in coffee, tea, and some sodas)
Alcohol
Spicy foods
Citrus fruits and juices
Tomato-based products
Chocolate
Focusing on non-irritating foods can help manage your comfort and recovery. Not to mention drinking water! Do not be afraid to drink water! I recommend half your body weight in ounces per day unless otherwise instructed by your physician.

4. Pre-Surgery Exercise
If possible, engage in regular, gentle exercise as advised by your healthcare provider. This can help maintain your strength and overall health, which aids recovery.

5. Home Safety Setup
Prepare your home before surgery to make post-surgery life easier. Position essentials within easy reach, set up a comfortable recovery area, and consider safety modifications like grab bars in the bathroom.

6. Adhere to Pre-Op Instructions
Follow all pre-operative instructions regarding fasting, medications, and other preparations. These are vital for a safe surgical procedure.

7. Mental and Emotional Health
Maintaining a positive outlook and having a strong support system in place can greatly affect your recovery. Consider talking to a mental health professional if you're feeling anxious or stressed.

These tips are designed to help you and your loved ones as you prepare for prostatectomy. Feel free to reach out if you have questions or need support. We're here to help you through your health journey!
