Why KWI?

Kentucky Welding Institute started with a grassroots approach getting input from Superintendents, Foremen, CWI’s, and welding professionals on what industry needed from a combo pipe welder. We conceived the most comprehensive certification package in the world. KWI combo pipe graduates lock in with AWS welding certifications (6010/7018, ER70s-2/7018, ER308 all on .625x2.75 pipe—with the opportunity to weld CuNi, Chrome, Inconel, Duplex, Stainless, Downhill and more), NCCER blue card training in welder, boilermaker, pipefitter, rigger, and safety, OSHA 30 cards, MSHA 24 certification, NCCCO certified rigger and signal cards, ASHI CPR and First Aid certifications, Basic Plus, TWIC, and CCS toxicology cards. In addition, KWI has the capability to Tappi Safe and Power Safe certify students as well.

Students train 40 hard hours a week during our 24-week program. During their time students weld SMAW, GTAW, FCAW, and GMAW on Miller and Lincoln inverter and generator machines. While each student has their own dedicated booth, ALL students spend adequate time welding in simulators, out of position, and outside in the elements ensuring they can make those field welds. Students are trained how to cut, prepare, and fit all their own plate and pipe using industry standard mechanical and thermal processes including but not limited to oxy-fuel, plasma, and carbon arc gouging. Our students lock in each day using a LOTO system, complete JSA’s, fill out Hot Work Permits, and give and receive safety briefs mimicking the daily routines of jobsites all across America. Each student is issued a complete 7-gallon, single hand gear bucket and have the tools necessary to walk on the job.

Furthermore, KWI enforces a strict 95% attendance policy translating into 1 absence (or 2 tardy) per month. Students are held to a zero-tolerance drug policy and are randomly tested using the Midwest toxicology CCS card program and a 14-panel drug test. Our combo pipe graduates aren’t just great welders they are excellent employees ready to work hard and promote the values industry esteems.
