When the topic of school vs. ABA therapy comes up, it usually feels like a battle of deciding what's best for the child. What if we didn't talk about as if we are making a decision that cannot be adjusted as the child grows and their skills develop? There are positives to BOTH standard school settings and ABA therapy.
Clinicians: It is our job to educate ourselves on each individual child and their needs to appropriately and effectively evaluate which setting offers the best environment and opportunities for their current needs. It is our job to articulate that to parents/guardians in a compassionate, understanding, and clear manner. An ego has no room in this discussion.
Parents: It is your right to ask every single question you have and to ensure you get an answer that makes sense and makes you feel included in the plan. Find an organization with clinicians who are willing and able to have these discussions with you. Find an organization who will work together to create, assess, and continually support a shared plan with the best outcomes always in focus.
