This is where it all began: the original building for Hurley Medical Center (called "Hurley Hospital" in 1908).

The original Hurley Hospital, shown soon after opening in 1908. Founder James J. Hurley was born on August 31st, 1849 in London. He arrived in Grand Blanc in 1871, working in a livery stable for $10 month. From there he was in the hotel business, owned the Flint Soap Works, started a wood and coal yard, headed the Flint precursor to Consumers Energy, and was a director at the Union Trust Bank - located where the Mott Foundation Building is today. His impact might have been even greater but he died young in 1900, just 51 years old. His legacy was secured however by his donation of $55,000 and the land at the highest point in the city to build the hospital that bears his name.

In 2002, Dr. Kirk Stucky made history as the first psychologist in the nation to secure funding from CMS for a hospital-based postdoctoral psychology training program. Today, our country is in a mental health crisis and even though the majority of local psychology specialists have trained in local fellowships, funding keeps getting cut. Dr. Kirk Stucky has devoted years advocating for funding for psychology training. It is fitting that he has now been honored with the APA Advocacy Service Award.

APA Chief of Professional Practice Jared Skillings, PhD, awarded the APA Services Advocacy Award to Kirk Stucky, PsyD, ABPP. This award is given to extraordinary psychologists who go above and beyond in their work to support the field, discipline, or practice of psychology through advocacy. Stucky was honored for his tireless efforts over the past two decades to advocate for postdoctoral psychology funding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In 2002, he made history as the first psychologist in the nation to secure funding from CMS for a hospital-based postdoctoral psychology training program, and in 2008, he coauthored an article to assist other postdoctoral training programs in securing CMS funding. Over time, his efforts helped secure millions of dollars from CMS for postdoctoral training in the state of Michigan.
