I am so happy to see all of the participation with our Gratitude Tree's around the cancer center and Hospitality House. At the beginning of November, I placed gratitude trees around the building, asking staff and patients to write down things that they are grateful for. Practicing gratitude has many health benefits, so I thought this could be a fun way to practice.

Here are some of the gratitude's written down (not all):
-Many people thanked their faith
-Food
-Family/ Support system
-Karmanos Cancer Center and our staff
-The gift of today
-Being a survivor/still living
-Their health
-'A second chance'
-'Waking up this morning'
-Love
-Our support programs (art therapy, social work, dietitian, nurse nav)
-Our staff
-Love, peace, happiness

Since this project was such a success, I plan on including it for the month of December!

Todays Mindful Monday Exercise: Fall Walk

As we enter the week of Halloween, I wanted to challenge everyone to take a Mindful Fall Walk for their mindfulness exercise. During your walk, take a moment to appreciate the leaves outside (color, size, location). Feel free to collect some as you stroll along. This is a beautiful time of the year, and it easily can get overlooked by the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Take a moment to slow down. Go for a slow 30 min walk outside. Bundle up if needed. Collect some leave. Take in the crisp air. Be present!

Here are some cute Halloween themed mindfulness exercises: https://calmahoykids.co.uk/2020/10/26/breathe-its-halloween-calming-broom-breaths-spooky-nature-crafts-and-relaxing-spells-for-little-monsters/

And a cute little mindful poem: The BROOM that had no ZOOM

There once was a witch who was in a bit of a muddle,
She'd dropped her broom in the most ginormous puddle.
Now all the magic had left her broom,
To be quite frank, her broom had no zoom.
Her black cat Berry, stretched up from the floor,
He stretched up high and stretched out each claw.
He jumped on witches shoulders and purred in her ear.
"Why don't we use our magic breath spell my dear".
Witchy was happy, she leaped in the air, "Yes" she said,
"Our magic breath will get us here and there!"
So on the broom the duo sat,
A happy Witch and her black Berry cat.
They read the spell and inhaled with focus,
As they exhaled they felt the rumble of hocus pocus.
The broom began to slowly fly,
And off they wizzed into the sky!

I am new to art therapy, what can I expect in a group art therapy session?

Each art therapy session will vary a little, but this is what you can generally expect:

1. Gather together as a group around a large table with art supplies provided for you.
2. Our art therapist will have a topic or project in mind for the session.
3. Each session group session lasts about 90 minutes. This will include a 15 min introduction, 50 min art making, and a 20 min discussion about your experience or what you made (sharing is optional).
3. At the end of each session, we will clean up the art supplies and sanitize as necessary.

Do I have to have art experience to participate in art therapy?

Nope!

This is a common misconception about art therapy. You do not have to have any previous art experience in order to participate in art therapy. Art therapy is about the creative art-making process, not about how good your artwork looks when you are finished. Therefore, you do not have to have any type of art skill coming into your session. Our art therapist will teach you how to use different art materials, if you are new to them, and answer any questions you may have. Come with an open mind and a willingness to try something new!
