New research from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine shows that poverty after prison doesn’t just cause financial stress — it also hurts how people think and make decisions. Lead researcher Jennifer Johnson said that when people return home from incarceration, “they face enormous cognitive and emotional burdens when struggling to meet basic needs.” The findings underscore how economic hardship can make re-entry even more difficult and why smarter, more supportive policies are needed.
