Everybody loves seeing Hurley Children's Hospital’s tiniest patients dressed in their festive, hand-crocheted outfits. From Christmas and Easter to football season, our precious NICU babies bring smiles to faces and warmth to hearts all year long. There’s just something magical about seeing these little fighters wrapped in love.
But behind every tiny hat, every delicate stitch, and every adorable outfit are two extraordinary women with even bigger hearts.
What started as a simple gesture of Pennie offering to make a few booties, blossomed into a beautiful and beloved tradition. Sandy shared easy patterns, and together, they began dressing infants for holidays like Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even the spirited rivalry between the Michigan Wolverines football and the Michigan State Spartans football. Each tiny outfit became a celebration, a reminder that even in life’s most fragile moments, there is still room for joy.
Seven years ago, they began a project that has touched countless lives and created a legacy woven with love, resilience, and hope. With steady hands and compassionate hearts, they have dedicated themselves to crafting delicate outfits for the smallest warriors in the NICU...transforming simple strands of yarn into comfort, encouragement, and light.
Their crochet work is more than a hobby. It’s a mission. A calling. A quiet but powerful way of reminding parents that they are not alone during some of the most uncertain days of their lives. Every stitch carries compassion. Every hat, every outfit, every detail whispers: your baby is cherished, your fight is seen, and hope is here.
Because of Pennie and Sandy, holidays feel brighter inside hospital walls. Milestones feel sweeter. And families facing long days find unexpected moments of warmth and strength.
This is what community looks like. This is love in action. And at Hurley, it’s a tradition that continues to wrap our tiniest miracles in comfort , one stitch at a time. 💕
