Last Friday, youth from the Pontiac Fostering Creativity Group were able to visit Therapy Ranch and see, pet, brush, and feed two beautiful horses (that they nicknamed “Brownie” and “Oreo”). None of these children have had the opportunity to visit a farm or see a horse IRL before. We had a picnic dinner, played games, drew pictures, and interacted with the horses. It was a very special, almost magical experience for each child. A big thank you to Lindsay Drouillard and her team for making us all feel so welcome!

Youth at our Detroit location created some very powerful vision boards during Saturday’s Art Therapy groups. Our guest clinician, Ms. Betsy, led the participants through several art directives: they started with a feelings mandala to get in touch with their state of mind in the present moment. Next, they thought about their goals & dreams for their futures and designed a vision board. They ended group time by discussing the steps they need to take in their individual lives to achieve their goals.

Our Pontiac Art Therapy group had a wonderful last session with the amazing Ms. Angie. They started the session with body work to let out some of their kinesthetic energy and find the calm and focus within their bodies. Then, all of the participants did one last feeling entry in their visual journal and worked on wrapping up unfinished art pieces. It was wonderful to see these youth supporting each other, working together, and being kind and patient with themselves. Lots of growth and discovery!♥️

Fostering Creativity

This therapeutic arts program addresses emotional issues/concerns experienced by children as a result of complex trauma, including circumstances which led to their removal from their birth parents or primary caregivers.

Fostering Creativity started at Ennis Center’s Flint location in 2014 and expanded to Ennis Center’s locations in Pontiac (2017) and Detroit (2019). The program is designed to support youth ages 5-21 in out-of-home placement/foster care (Flint and Pontiac) and youth who are involved, or are at risk of being involved, in the juvenile justice system (Detroit) through therapeutic arts programming and art therapy.

This grant-funded program would not be possible without the generous support of the following foundations: Ruth Mott Foundation, Hagerman Foundation, Flinn Foundation, Flint ReCAST, Community Foundation of Greater Flint, Child Welfare Society of Flint, and Ticket to Dream.

Ennis Center for Children has offered an array of services to meet the needs of foster children and their families since its beginning. To date, Ennis Center provides foster care, adoption, and related support services to more than 6,000 children and families annually.
