I’m not sure which Autism mom needs to hear this but when they say your child will never speak, tell them what God said 👇🏽

Love this! Teach these babies how to love themselves and others. Inclusion starts with a conversation about differences and being accepting of those differences. My goal is to create safe spaces for everyone. If you’re a business owner or educator, what are you doing to make your places of business inclusive?

Autism Acceptance: Embracing
In recent years, the autism community has seen a significant shift from mere awareness to a deeper understanding and acceptance of autism. This transition is visually and symbolically represented by the change in color from blue to red, embodied in the hashtags # LightItUpBlue and . But why this shift, and what does it signify?

Why Acceptance Over Awareness?
1. Empowerment: Acceptance implies not just knowing that autism exists but understanding and valuing autistic individuals as they are. It’s about creating a world where autistic people are empowered to live full, meaningful lives.
2. Inclusivity: Acceptance focuses on inclusivity and belonging, acknowledging the diversity within autism and recognizing each individual’s unique strengths and challenges.
3. Self-Advocacy: Encouraging self-advocacy is central to the acceptance movement. Autistic individuals are the best experts on their own experiences, and their voices are crucial in shaping policies and practices that affect them.
4. Reducing Stigma: Awareness alone can sometimes unintentionally perpetuate stereotypes and stigma. Acceptance works to combat these by promoting a more nuanced and positive understanding of autism.

Let’s wear red to support and signify our commitment to learning, understanding, and accepting the autistic community.

World Autism Acceptance Day is April 2nd.

We’ve been celebrating Autism Awareness since the 1970s and to date, I’ve not seen any real improvements when it comes to acceptance and inclusivity.

This year feels different…

⭐ New Resource ⭐ All About Autistic Meltdowns: A Guide For Allies https://reframingautism.org.au/all-about-autistic-meltdowns-a-guide-for-allies/

An Autistic meltdown, also sometimes referred to as an autonomic storm, is a reaction to feelings of intense overwhelm, distress, or dysregulation. Although some may see an Autistic meltdown as a tantrum, or worse – as someone being manipulative to get their way – that is not the case.

A meltdown is not a conscious behaviour that can be changed, but rather an uncontrollable response to overwhelming feelings; a physical reaction to an overwhelmed brain. Too much information from sensory or cognitive stimuli triggers the automatic nervous system, which then signals to the brain that the person is in danger. This results in behaviours of distress, which can manifest in a variety of ways.
