Portable generators are great devices as the weather gets cold or after a big storm. However, they can also be dangerous if not used correctly.

Improper use of portable generators can lead to deadly carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that can build up quickly in enclosed spaces, making it a silent killer.

When using a portable generator, use these safety tips:
Always place generators outside, at least 20 feet away from windows, doors, or vents.
Never use a generator inside your home, garage, or basement.
Install carbon monoxide alarms in your home to alert you of dangerous levels of CO.
