Fl**ge fit is so important when pumping. Oxytocin is the hormone that tells your body to let the milk down which is stimulated by ni**le stretching. When the fl**ge is too big or even too small it does not allow just the ni**le to stretch to keep stimulating the oxytocin during the pumping session. Here is a great chart to show how the fl**ge is suppose to fit. Most pumps come with 24 mm fl**ges and sometimes even 28mm. The majority of the time these sizes are too big and allow for ni**le and ar**la to be pulled into the ni**le tube. This causes pain and now milk output! Please reach out if you have any questions about fl**ge fit!

A common challenge many women deal with in the beginning is ni**le pain, sometimes even experiencing cracked or bleeding ni**les. Is this normal? The answer is simple, NO!
I remember when I was pregnant with my oldest who is 15 and someone told me to start rubbing my ni**les with a towel each day after the shower to toughen them up. I tried it a few times and it was awful and painful. However when my daughter was born and I experienced crack and bleeding ni**les the bad information just kept coming. Nursing staff told me that my ni**les just had to toughen up and it would take some time. I was even told because I had red hair and fair skin I was just going to hurt. Well the pain never went away until I was forced to give up after just 3 weeks because I was pumping blood and no one seemed to be able to tell me how to make it stop. Yikes…I know!!

Breastfeeding should never hurt. Your ni**les don’t have to get use to it or toughen up because baby shouldn’t be latching onto your ni**le but behind it. If you are experience pain then its time to reach out to an experienced lactation expert. Attending a breastfeeding class before birth is a great way to know what to expect. A class also gives you the information on when and who to reach out to when you are having issues.

Did you receive crazy advice while pregnant or nursing? Feel free to share in the comments. It might just help another mama!

Thank you for visiting my page! I am a Certified Lactation Counselor and have been working with families in the Shoals area for over 8 years. I have a deep passion for empowering women and helping families meet their feeding goals. I struggled feeding my own children and experienced so many problems. Finding help nearby wasn’t easy. I was met with so much misinformation over the years which is what lead me to this career path. Not only do I help with lactation concerns, but also bottle feeding. I offer breastfeeding classes that touch a little on birth and also host a breastfeeding support group.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME:
I am married to my husband Chase who has been such an amazing support. He has encouraged and pushed me to reach my career goals. We are a blended family with 6 children. I gave birth to 3 of them. My first was born via emergency c-section and the lack of breastfeeding education and support, I was only able to breastfeed 3 weeks. My second was born via VBAC with epidural. We experienced many of the same issues as my first but I was more informed and found wonderful help, and while I had to supplement with formula for many months I was able to nurse him long term. My 3rd was born completely natural and I was able to exclusively breastfeed her for 2 years with only a small issue in the first few weeks.
I feel these details of my experiences are important to show not every journey is the same. Preparing and learning about nursing makes it easier to reach your goals. Even though my goal was to exclusively nurse each of my babies, I am happy for my experiences because they lead me down my career path. I also learned along the way that bottle feeding needs education also. Not all bottles are created equal and not all babies can use the same bottle. Bottles can account for so many problems.
My career began 2014 after my 2nd was born and I had so many problems. I started sharing my experience and helping other moms overcome similar challenges. In 2015 I accepted a position with the WIC program at the Health Dept as a Breastfeeding Peer Counseling. I educated pregnant women on their feeding options and how to get breastfeeding off to a great start. I worked with moms helping them work through their feeding challenges and reach their goals. I knew I still wanted to do more. I started doing research and decided to become a Certified Lactation Consultant. I traveled to Knoxville to attend the training. In 2019 I officially became a CLC. I have done home visits for several years now but am so excited to officially have an office to be more available to mothers in our area. To date I have worked with over 1000 moms and babies!
My office is located at KickStart Speech Therapy. I was so beyond excited that Audrey contacted me to join her. I have big plans to continue to grow my practice and reach as many families as i can!! Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you!!
