It can feel confusing when something as simple as saying “no” brings up anxiety, guilt, or the urge to over-explain.

That’s often not about the moment you’re in - it’s about what your nervous system learned earlier on about keeping relationships safe.

If boundaries once led to conflict, withdrawal, or disconnection, of course they don’t feel easy now.

So instead of forcing yourself to “just set better boundaries,” try a different starting point:

What feels just safe enough to express?

Healing boundaries aren’t built all at once.
They’re built in small, tolerable steps your system can actually hold.

And over time, they start to feel less like risk - and more like self-trust.

If you’ve ever thought, “Why am I still reacting like this?” or “I know I’m safe now, so why doesn’t it feel that way?” - there’s nothing wrong with you. Your system adapted to protect you.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) helps us understand that the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors we struggle with are often protective parts shaped by past experiences. These parts developed for a reason — even when they no longer feel helpful.
