The Sad Cost of Diabetes on the feet in America

28.7 million diagnosed diabetics and another 8.5 million undiagnosed

• Cost of diabetes is 327 billion dollars as of 2017
• In 2018 8.25 million hospital discharges due to diabetes.
• In 2018 there were 17 million ER visits due to diabetes
• In 2021 there were 130,000 lower extremity amputations
directly due to diabetes.
• 80% of people who have had an amputation will die in 5
years.
• Peripheral Vascular Disease is a major cause of complication
associated with Diabetes

More Facts

Eligible diabetics are entitled to one pair of diabetic shoes per calendar year on Medicare and most commercial insurance plans,
yet only about 3% of diabetics receive their annual pair of diabetic shoes. Studies show that Diabetic Shoe therapy significantly reduces the risk of ulcerative breakdown, infection, and limb loss to patients with a diabetic foot.

For the patients who qualify for this benefit, and with the assistance of your primary care provider, Podiatrists have the easiest path to dispense diabetic shoes in their practice. Podiatrists can prescribe the shoes, perform the foot exam note, and supply the shoes directly to their own patients.

Winter Weather Footnotes.....

Winter FUN FACT:

you know those foot and hand warmers you can buy at the store ... Ever wonder what causes them to produce heat ? The active ingredient is RUST.... The oxygen in the air combines with the iron oxide powder in those little packets to create warmth. (that's why the instructions don't want you puncturing or opening the packets until you're ready to use them). The same process that occurs over years can also occur over a matter of minutes, and the chemical reaction causes heat.

Winter Weather Footnotes......

Recommendation #3... Frostnip and rewarming your feet.

Frostnip is a mild form of frostbite that occurs when the blood vessels to your feet and toes constrict, diverting blood away from your skin to your body core to prevent hypothermia. Often your toes (or fingers) will get red, develop numbness, and experience tingling.

You need to get out of the cold and rewarm yourself asap. Often times the most effective way is a warm water bath. MAKE SURE you have a thermometer handy, as often times if your toes are numb, you could inadvertently burn your skin if the water is too hot. If you can tolerate it, taking an anti-inflammatory may also help with the pain.

You want the water to be between 105 - 110 F (or 40-43 C). Soaking for 15-20 minutes usually does the job. YOU may feel a burning / stinging pain as your toes rewarm, but this should subside over the course of about 30-60 minutes. If the color of your toes doesn't return to normal, or if you notice blistering or prolonged numbness, you should see a doctor.

Winter Weather FootNotes...

Recommendation #2: Moisture is the enemy to the toe in winter conditions. Wear moisture wicking socks when out in the cold. Your feet will suffer more if they get wet or have moisture penetrating through the shoes or boots. Cotton socks or shoes with cotton-based insoles will wick perspiration and wetness, so they will retain moisture, keeping your feet damp and cold.

INSTEAD, use socks that are made of wool or polypropylene. Also, in cold weather conditions, consider a shoe with more leather, and less mesh, to block airflow. Using a leather water-proofer or leather protector will further help in repelling moisture. Hope this helps!

Benefits of L-Arginine

Hello to all the cold feet out there ! Living in Northern KY during the winter can be rough, and our toes can often feel the pain if they are not properly insulated during winter activities. In addition to proper shoes or boots, L-Arginine is an amino-acid and has been shown to help improve peripheral circulation. This over-the-counter supplement can help open up the blood vessels in your feet, and is also known to help lower blood pressure. This may help to keep those toes warm in the winter months.

According to clinical studies, the needed L-arginine dosage per day is 5,000 mg to 6,000 mg. However, the dosage may change depending on what you are using it for. Many people will start out at a much lower dose initially, and then slowly / gradually increase the dose as the weeks go by, based on their tolerance.

As always, no medication or supplement is without risk, and
L-Arginine is no exception - especially if you take blood pressure medications, diabetic medications, medications for erectile dysfunction, blood thinners or anti-coagulants, water pills (diuretics), or have a history of heart attack, asthma or airway inflammation, allergic response, gout, or migraine headaches. - PLEASE consult your doctor before moving forward with taking of this medication.
