Our core word of the summer has been Hello! ☀️😎👋🏻
Social:
-Saying “hi” to others will help build social skills
-Greetings: “Hi _____ [name] ! How are you?”
-Acknowledge: “Hi! I see you!”
-Initiate: “Hi friend! Want to play?”
Routines and Schedules:
-ARRIVAL - when arriving to a room or location, model saying “hi” or “hello” to friends and adults around. This provides a focused way to greet and acknowledge others.
-Provide opportunities for the child to say ‘hi’/’hello’ to others in a variety of ways during the day when going different places. Provide wait time for the child to be able to also return the greeting as/if appropriate.
Play:
-Say “hi” or “hello” when you and the child find something or someone you are looking for
-Play Peekaboo where you say “bye” and duck down from sight and then pop up again and say, ‘hi’/’hello’. Fade your voice as the child catches on to the game and provide wait time for them to say “hi” on their own
-“hi/hello” to toys as you pull them out to play with
-Use “open the flap” books to model “hi/hello” while reading and find things behind the flaps
-sing “hello friend, hello friend, hello friend, we’re glad to have you here”
