As 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 comes to a close, we look back on how it started. The history traces back to 1945, when it started as a week and focused only on people with physical disabilities. Later, it expanded to a full month, and its name and scope evolved to acknowledge the importance of increasing the workforce inclusion of people with all nature of disabilities.

The Campaign for Disability Employment created the “Who I Am” PSA with that very question in mind. “Who I Am” features nine real people with disabilities—some obvious and some not—sharing how they describe themselves, from personal interests to family relationships to occupations.

Bringing a service animal to work can be a vital part of maintaining independence and managing a disability — but understanding your rights in the workplace is not always straightforward. While the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides protections and allows employees to request reasonable accommodations, it doesn’t specifically address service animals in employment settings.
