Empathy development: Mirror Neurons

We use empathy when we see/observe someone else’s body language, facial expressions especially, and formulate an appropriate response.

The Bilateral Anterior Insula, Left anterior cingulate gyrus, and left inferior parietal lobe are activated in the process of translating what we see so we can relate to the world. We harness these pieces of information and translate them into an appropriate response.

Covering our faces, particularly children who are still developing these neural pathways, is deleterious to this system and will damage our ability to connect with each other as human beings in a compassionate way.

There is a place in our brain whose JOB it is to live in other peoples minds. It connects us. It’s miraculous. It’s why we invent ways to connect: hand shake, hug, dances, gatherings are all inventions. It’s why we cry when we see videos of children hugging their dads who’ve come home after a 2 year military leave… it’s why a school shooting terrorizes is all.

I realize we must mask in some contexts. BUT this makes it much more critical to connect and emote with our children in our homes and wherever masking is not necessary. Please remember to get the screens put away and connect as people.

Georgetown School of Medicine 2006: in 1895, Niels Finsen of Denmark effectively treated TB with high intensity light from an electric arc lamp. His phototherapy cured 95% of TB patients.

By 1903, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work.

By the 1920s, sunlight had become the treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis.

Sunlight up-regulates your body’s production of vitamin D, which then ramps up an anti microbial peptide, LL-37. ONLY D3 boosts levels of LL-37 in human neutrophils, improving the immune response. LL-37 inside of human macrophages engulfs are kills tuberculosis.

African Americans and Black Americans have skin pigment that shields them from sunlight, making it necessary for them to have longer sun exposure to produce adequate immune molecules (could this be why people of color are a higher death risk with C@V!D?)

D3 also regulates 2 immune molecules that regulate scar tissue formation: IL-16 and T helper 17. If your D3 is low, fibrosis gets out of control.

But you can’t patent that. So... let’s think. Stay inside, don’t go anywhere, get a lousy immune system. Then you become completely dependent on drugs? Lowered D levels increases risk of ALL disease. Especially cancer.

Every cell in the body has 1 receptor for Vitamim D3 and 2 for vitamin A. Retinol is vitamin A. Beta carotene, found in carrots and tomatoes, is an anti oxidant. But our geniuses in the FDA allow beta carotene to be advertised as the fat-soluble Vitamin A so they can sell more carrots and tomatoes I suppose... vitamin A and D are fat soluble. Beta carotene is water soluble. Here is how different the two are:

Stressed? Can’t sleep?
Don’t reach for Ambien.

According to the journal Clinical Therapeutics, 36, no. 11, (2014) pp 1676-1701, Ambien wrecks ability to remember. The University of Pennsylvania researchers gave weight-specific titrated doses of Ambien. Compared to non-drugged subjects, the Ambien Group not only couldn’t wire the brain for the new learning circuits. They also had a 50% WEAKENING of brain connections from other previously learned information.

American Journal of Public Heath, October 16, 2014. Assoc Between Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption and Leukocyte Telomere Length In Healthy Adults from the Nat’l Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys.

In 5,309 adults ages 20-65, each daily 8-Oz serving of sugar beverage accelerated aging by 1.9 years.

For every daily 8 Oz sugar beverage sucked down, you suck 2 years of your life away. So if you do it daily for 5 years, 5x2 is 10
Years literally flushed down your toilet

For every 20 ounce serving, it’s 4.6 years of additional aging. 5x4.6 = 23 years down the toilet.

Daily Exercise ADDED 4.4 years of telomere
length.

A daily quality multiple vitamin added anywhere from 5-12 years.

Aren’t we always curious as to why American cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and brain disease continue to rise? I am certain it is a multi factorial, complex problem. But these numbers are worth a look.

Change in food consumption per person:

Sugar 1900= 5 lbs/yr 2000= 170 lbs/yr
Soda 1900 =0 gallons/yr 2000=53 gallons/yr
Trans fats 1900=4 lbs/yr. 2000=74 lbs/yr
Cheese. 1900=2 lbs/yr. 2000= 30 lbs/yr

Meat 1900=140 lbs/yr. 2000=40 lbs/year

Homegrown produce 1900=131 lbs/yr
Homegrown produce 2000 = 11 lbs/yr

Food matters:
Scripts Research Institute in Florida found that feeding rats junk food:
1. Degraded the brain’s reward system
2. Caused obesity, lethargy
3. Created a brain preference for unhealthy food
4. Literally changed the structure of the brain.
Learning areas of the brain shrank, dopamine receptors plummeted(like in a drug addict or alcoholic)

At mealtimes, shocks were administered to rats. Rats eating a normal diet stopped eating. Rats eating junk food kept eating while they were being shocked.

The chemicals and fat/sugar/salt ratios in junk food degrade the brains of these rats. Do you suppose the same thing happens to humans?
According to Murphy, C. Nutrition and Chemosensory Perception in the Elderly, it does.
