Don’t leave water in the tub after bath time ends. Little ones are naturally curious and can quickly find their way to water, even when you least expect it. Whether you’re using a baby bathtub, bath seat, or an inflatable tub, always empty them immediately after use. Store them upside down and out of children’s reach to keep your little ones safe.

For older responsible kids who are ready to learn how to cook safely, the microwave can be a good starting point. Here are a couple simple steps to keep your little chef safe from potential burns:
- Don’t allow children to use a microwave by themselves until they are tall enough to reach it safely and are able to understand that steam can cause burns.
- Slowly open containers that have been in the microwave, as steam can burn little fingers and faces.

Every child is different, but developmentally, most kids are unable to judge the speed and distance of oncoming cars until age 10. It’s never too early to teach kids how to walk safely. Be a good role model for young children and set a good example by walking on sidewalks, crossing at street corners, and using traffic signals and crosswalks.

In every state, it’s illegal to pass a school bus when the stop-arm is extended and the red lights are flashing. The most dangerous part of the school bus ride is getting on and off. When drivers ignore stop arms and flashing red lights, they put kids at risk. Let’s look out for each other and always stop for school buses!

Who's ready for some football?!

Whether you are cheering for your favorite team, loving the commercials, or hosting the watch party, it's important to keep safety front and center.

Many people upgrade or rearrange their TVs for Super Bowl viewing, but unstable TVs and furniture tip-overs can cause serious injuries, especially to kids. Make sure your TV is properly anchored to the wall or stable furniture, and secure cords so no one trips or pulls on them during the game.

Let's enjoy every play and keep our homes safe while we do it!

As winter storms impact our area, bringing with them freezing temperatures, families will be spending more time bundled up indoors. Using heaters and portable generators can help families stay warm but can also increase the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. CO is an odorless, colorless gas, which means exposure often happens without warning.

Here are some steps you can take to ensure your family stay warm and safe:
- Install CO alarms on every level of your home, especially around sleeping areas.
- Test CO alarms every month.
- Warm up vehicles outside of your garage.

As families get ready for colder days ahead, it’s a good time to check in on a few simple winter safety reminders.

- If your child is wearing a bulky jacket, don’t be tempted to loosen the car seat harness to make it fit. All that extra air in the coat can make the harness seem snug when it’s not tight enough to protect them in a crash. Adjust the harness while your child’s coat is off, then keep them warm with a blanket or jacket over the harness instead.

- Be aware of the heightened dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning when using alternative heating methods. Avoid using your oven, stovetop, or kerosene heaters to warm your home. Test CO alarms every month and install them near sleeping areas.

- Keep your baby’s crib free of stuffed animals and extra blankets. A firm mattress with a tight-fitting sheet is all your baby needs to sleep safely and comfortably.

As you ring in the New Year, don’t forget about sparkler safety, especially around kids! Sparklers may look harmless, but they can burn hotter than you think and cause serious injuries.

Keep kids safe this New Year’s Eve by following these safety tips:
• Never place sparklers in a child’s hand
• Keep a bucket of water nearby to put out used sparklers
• Light sparklers one at a time and supervise closely
• Keep sparklers away from faces, hair, and clothing
• Dispose of sparklers properly once they’ve cooled

Consider safer alternatives like glow sticks, confetti poppers, or light-up toys so kids can still join the celebration.

Let’s start the New Year injury-free and full of fun!
