As I started out in my OB/GYN practice in 1993, I quickly learned that if your course of treatment did not achieve the desired result, the patient would be back and not happy. At that time, Premarin was the gold standard. The patients never felt like they did prior to menopause and their symptoms were dramatically worse if they were surgically menopausal. They seemed to gain weight very easily and many just accepted this as the way their life was going to be for the next 20-25 years. In an effort to better serve their needs, I became interested in bio-identical hormone therapy. I began this journey by listening to my patients and creating a hormone checklist to prompt them to think about their symptoms and not just assume this was all part of getting older. I empowered them to make changes and to not settle for feeling only half as good as they did prior to treatment. The results were amazing and I became very driven to help my patients feel the best they could. During this time, it became apparent to me that correcting the hormone imbalance was a great step toward feeling better, but I had to treat the whole person in the process. That meant helping the patient achieve their ideal body weight. I started like many other physicians by prescribing diet medications. I found that all this did was enable them to lose weight but they all put it right back on and sometimes more! I knew there had to be a better way. That is when I decided to get trained in bariatrics. With this training, I was able to better understand that obesity needs to be treated as a medical condition and that it also requires long term care. It all came together for me combining my hormonal expertise with my bariatric training. I developed, what I coined, the "synergy system" for weight loss. This system utilizes bio-identical hormone balance with metabolic balance, combined with effective diets, to achieve maximum weight loss. The next challenge was the maintenance of their weight loss. Once the patient was hormonally and metabolically balanced, the maintenance of weight was much easier. I was able to achieve unheralded success utilizing my "synergy system". My vision is to teach this system to other doctors around the country so they can empower their patients to feel as good as they possibly can. J. Marshall Dent, III, M.D. SPECIALITY:
