Spring Pattern Shift: Rain and Storms Return to Alabama ⛈️

Enjoy the warm, dry air today because a significant shift in the weather pattern is on the horizon. ☀️ After an unusually dry start to April—with Birmingham currently 3.45 inches below normal since March 1—we are finally looking at several waves of rain to help dent that deficit. 📉💧

The Timeline 🗓️

Today (Thursday): Fair, warm, and very dry. Highs in the mid-80s. 🧴🕶️

Friday Night – Saturday Morning: Our first round of storms arrives. A Marginal Risk has been introduced for Northwest Alabama. ⛈️ While the greatest severe threat remains to our west, storms will rumble through overnight, reaching the Speedway after 9 PM. ⛺💤

Talladega Weekend: Good news for race fans! 🏎️🏁 While we have a 70% chance of rain Saturday morning, it should improve for the afternoon races. Sunday’s Jack Links 500 looks mostly sunny and warm with only a 20% chance of a stray storm. 🌤️

Watching Monday (April 27) ⚠️
We have marked Monday as a First Warning Impact Day. The Storm Prediction Center has already highlighted our area for potential severe weather. We know the weight this date carries in Alabama history; our goal is to keep you prepared, not worried. The main threat currently looks to be Monday evening and night, bringing risks of high wind gusts and hail. Tornado threat? Hard to nail that down, but I'll be watching it.💨

Stay tuned to WVTM 13 for the latest timing and intensity updates as we head into the weekend! 📺📱

Blackberry winter ahead? 🫐

Alabama is about to run warm and dry for most of the next week, with highs well into the 80s Tuesday through Saturday — flirting with record territory nearly every day. Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Huntsville, Montgomery and all points in between: you'll see upper 80s to near 90 degrees by Friday. Not much to hope rain-wise until a cold front arrives Saturday night, with timing still being refined. Sunday clears out by afternoon. Maybe a few showers/storms in NW Alabama on Thursday evening.

Then comes Monday. Morning lows in the 40s — no frost expected — under a fair sky. Classic Blackberry Winter timing. Old-timers knew: when the blackberries bloom, one more cold snap usually follows. This one looks to fit that mold (even if it's a tad earlier than normal).

Here's the day-by-day:

📅 Tuesday: Mostly sunny, mid-80s
📅 Wednesday: Partly cloudy, mid-to-upper 80s
📅 Thursday: Sun/clouds, upper 80s — slight shower chance NW Alabama late
📅 Friday: Warm and humid, 85-90°
📅 Saturday: Upper 80s to low 90s — storms arrive by evening/night
📅 Sunday: Morning showers, then clearing — lower 70s
📅 Monday: Sunny, cool — 40s north / 70s Birmingham southward

Are the blackberries blooming in your yard yet? Drop your location/pic of the blooms in the comments — I want to know where they're already going! 👇

📢With worsening drought conditions across the state and low relative humidity, State Forester Rick Oates has issued a statewide Fire Alert effective immediately.

Over the past weekend, 50 wildfires burned more than 2,300 acres of forestland across the state. This includes a 500-acre wildfire in Mobile County, one for 412 acres in Coosa County, one for 382 acres in Choctaw County, one for 260 acres in Washington County, and another one for 105 acres in Escambia County.

In the last 30 days, 387 wildfires have burned approximately 15,850 acres of forestland across the state.

“With no measurable rain in sight, the continued extremely dry conditions create dangerous wildfire behavior,” said Oates. “These conditions create the potential for fires to escape easily and spread rapidly, taking longer and more of the agency’s firefighting resources to contain. Fast-moving wildfires not only destroy property and forests but also threaten the lives of citizens and endanger firefighters.”

This Fire Alert will remain in effect until rescinded by the State Forester, at least through Monday, April 20. Conditions will be reevaluated at that time. Permits for outdoor burning will be restricted only to Certified Prescribed Burn Managers. Anyone who burns a field, grassland, or woodland without a burn permit may be subject to prosecution for committing a Class B misdemeanor.

The Alabama Forestry Commission is the state agency committed to protecting Alabama’s invaluable forest assets and its citizens. To report a wildfire, call (800) 392-5679. For more information on the current wildfire situation in the state or any other forestry-related issues, contact your local AFC office or visit the agency website at www.forestry.alabama.gov
