Connally Memorial Medical Center, in partnership with San Antonio Eye Bank, held a Donate Life Gift of Sight flag-raising ceremony today.
The ceremony honored three cornea donor heroes from South Texas who came from our hospital and whose gifts made six sight-restoring transplants possible.
The event recognized National Eye Donation Month and highlighted the impact of cornea donation, which remains the only way to restore sight for millions affected by corneal blindness.
During the ceremony, Casandra Castro of San Antonio Eye Bank read the names of our 2024 donor heroes and shared a tribute to their lifesaving legacy.
We are grateful for the opportunity to honor these donors and their families and to support awareness of the Gift of Sight.

🌟 Manager Recognition Spotlight 🌟
Today we are proud to highlight Pam McGrew, RN, Clinic System Manager at CMMC. Pam is a compassionate leader who brings dedication, strength, and heart to everything she does. Her commitment to patient care and team success inspires us all. 💙

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare?
A: I was drawn to healthcare because I wanted to contribute to a mission larger than myself. I knew early on I wanted a career where I could support patients through difficult moments, advocate for them, and create a sense of safety and trust. Nursing has given me hands on care while also allowing me to grow into my current role where I can support my teams, improve processes, and help create a positive and patient centered environment. The blend of service and leadership is what inspires me every day.

Q: What are some of your proudest accomplishments in your career so far?
A: From stepping into the clinic manager role to mentoring new medical assistants and nurses, navigating challenges, and advocating for both my staff and patients, each experience has helped shape me into a stronger and more effective leader. I have always made it my priority to never come across as a boss but always as a leader.

Q: How do you stay motivated, or what keeps you passionate about what you do?
A: My passion comes from leading a team that is committed to providing excellent care. I am motivated by opportunities to support my staff, solve problems, and create a positive and efficient environment that keeps everyone wanting to come to work and feel the same satisfaction in healthcare that I experience.

Q: What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?
A: Outside of work, my family and the outdoors keep me balanced. I enjoy bow hunting, sitting by the pool, and taking lots of day trips.

November is Eye Donation Month. Eye Donation Month spreads the word about cornea donation and transplantation, honors selfless donors who gave the gift of sight, celebrates recipients whose lives have been transformed, and educates about donation and encourages individuals to register as donors.

On Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at 9:15 AM, a brief ceremony honoring those who have donated the gift of sight at Connally Memorial Hospital will be held. Their names will be read, and a flag will be raised in their honor. Everyone is welcome.

Meet Hilda Torres, BSN, RN, with our CMMC Infusion Center!
Her compassion, leadership, and commitment to patient care make a tremendous impact every single day. 💚

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare?
A: I got interested in healthcare from observing early on how much of a difference good and compassionate care can make in a person's day. I like helping patients fully understand what is going on with them. I enjoy learning how the body works and being there to provide that education to the people I care for.

Q: What are some of your proudest accomplishments in your career so far?
A: Obtaining my Medical/Surgical Certification and working in that unit for 11 years. Converting my LVN license into a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing over the years. Training for and eventually leading the IV Therapy and Special Procedures team at CMMC.

Q: How do you stay motivated, or what keeps you passionate about what you do?
A: Remembering the Why and for Who keeps me motivated. This includes patients, my family, and myself. At the end of the day, no matter how hard or easy it is, I know I have made at least a small difference in someone's health situation.

Q: What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?
A: I do not really have hobbies, but when I am not at work I try to spend as much quality time as possible with my daughter and family.

Today, Connally Memorial Medical Center proudly honored our staff members who are veterans, along with all who have served our great nation. We are deeply grateful for your courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to protecting our freedoms.

As part of our observance, we held a Veterans Day Prayer Service and Blessing of the Veterans, led by our CMMC Chaplain, Jennifer "Birdie" Shawker, and Chaplain Al Riley. It was a heartfelt tribute to those who have served and a powerful reminder of how their dedication continues to strengthen and unite our community.

To our veterans, past and present, thank you for your service, your bravery, and your sacrifice. You are true heroes, and today we honor you. ❤️🤍💙
