“All night, he kept hearing the same overhead alert. After the fourth or fifth time, he finally asked the nurse, ‘What is a Code Gray?’”

Guardian Nurses Founder and President Betty Long shared this story at the GPBCH Regional Leapfrog Quality and Safety Awards in Philadelphia.

She reflected on a recent conversation with her own family—and how something so routine in a hospital can still be completely unknown to the people inside it. That disconnect says a lot about how hidden workplace violence remains in healthcare, even for those closest to us.

Behind every “routine” shift, too many nurses are absorbing moments of fear, disruption, and harm while still expected to deliver calm, steady care.

“You cannot have patient safety without healthcare worker safety.”

Our biggest team brings a big impact!

Incredibly grateful to spotlight our Philadelphia and New Jersey Building Trades team this Nurses Week. With over 20 members, this team supports many across both sides of the bridge, helping people navigate care and feel supported every day.

It’s a federal crime to assault federal officers and airline crew members. Healthcare workers, however, don’t have the same level of protection.

This , nearly 19,000 people have signed a petition urging Congress to pass the Save Healthcare Workers Act, which would make assaulting hospital staff a federal crime.

According to Nurse.org’s 2026 survey, 27% of nurses report being physically assaulted on the job in the past year, and 52% say they’ve faced verbal threats or aggression.

Betty Long, MHA, RN, founder and president of Guardian Nurses Healthcare Advocates, started this petition to push for the bill to reach the House floor.
