My thoughts and prayers go to Ahmaud’s family. This verdict won’t bring him back, but it will show that his life mattered and he had every right to live and breathe free. One day a just verdict will be the norm. We have a long way to go.

My kids rarely do extracurricular activities. I will fully admit my privilege that my kids go to a school with awesome enrichments. But even when they didn’t I had no plans for packed after school schedules.

I see kids that have an activity nearly every day of the week. Things that once were fun have turned into commitments. These kids are fried. Worse, adults put insane pressure on them to continue in activities that don’t serve them. The Hustle culture is bad for adults and kids. Plus, you wind up spend beaucoup bucks later to have your kid process their feelings in therapy. Just keeling it real. It’s ok to do nothing sometimes.

When children lose someone important in their lives, it is normal for feelings of grief and loss to intensify during certain times throughout the year.

Transitioning to a new normal is a hard adjustment for parents and children to make. 🙇‍♂️

Sometimes there is a disconnect that can happen between parents and children where signs of needing help may go unnoticed or there is an explainable block that is preventing the ability to understand one another.

As a parent, you want to try and do everything in your power to protect and shelter your children from feeling hurt.

So it's discouraging and devasting when you feel like you've tried everything to help your child through these intense emotional feelings and nothing seems to help.

Sometimes an outside perspective is what can make all the difference. By seeking help and guidance from a third party who is emotional detached from the situation, may be able to approach the situation from a new angle and provide some relief.

At Amel Counseling and Consulting, we help kids establish coping skills that meet them right where they are. If you feel like your child is struggling through a difficult loss and you aren't sure what to do, learn more about how grief and loss therapy may be able to help.

Everyone faces different kinds of challenges throughout their lives, but kids and teens of color may face different challenges that may not be relatable to their peers.

Being a kid in school is hard enough as it is.

But being picked on, treated differently, or isolated completely can be triggering to their mental health.

There is so much power in simply not feeling alone.
So much power in not feeling like they are the only ones going through something.
So much power in having something or someone they can relate to.

Therapy for kids and teens of color is one way that you can stack your team with additional support.

The world we live in is broken.

Broken in more ways than any one person can count.

It can be so easy to let our minds dwell on the broken.
Especially when that broken thing (like systemic racism) is apparent in our everyday lives.

It's EASY to shoulder and carry heavy feelings of sadness and fear all the time. And it gets worse as we start to see our children begin to carry those same feelings.

But I have hope.

I have hope for our future.
I have hope for our children.
and I have hope for our children's future, that change will happen.

Because Hope for a better tomorrow is what drives, motivates, and inspires us to continue to stand together today. 💪

Some days you just really need a reminder like this.

We are STRONG
We are CAPABLE
We are LOVING
We are HUMAN BEINGS

We are WORTHY

And so are our children.

Let's spread this Hope around and share this post.

Sending massive amounts of love and happiness to you all! 💟

Even the most consistent parents have bad days. It’s the effort you put in all the other times that make the difference.

When your kid checks you, how do your respond? Anger, shame, indignation? I’ll be real, all of those things flood my head and heart. But that’s due to how I was raised. It has zip-zero to do with my little people. So I work hard to find humility. I also know that the times I fail give me a the opportunity to grow. And that’s what I want me kids to do too. ❤️

Quick check-in for all my parents and caregivers. You carry the weight of your family's world on your shoulders.

And it's so easy to put your needs at the very bottom of the list. So easy, in fact, that you don't notice until you burn out. It's become such a norm, the frazzled parent- counting down the hours or minutes to bedtime/logging off/people shutting up.

Here's the thing - you can't give from an empty cup. (I know, easier said than done but hear me out).

If your family is going through the emotional roller coaster of 2020/21, you are going to feel the need to be the emotional rock for your children.

But I want you to take a moment and check in with yourself first.

How are you coping? It's you feel you aren't.

Is what you are doing sustainable? Now you know if you have to adjust your plan.

I often go back to my 3 C's- Consistency, Clarity, and Compassion for parenting advice. It works for kids and adults too.

I practice self-compassion regularly. I paint my nails when I'm stressed. It takes me 5-10 minutes. Afterward, I have a visual reminder of my act of self-love. too!

What do you need during times of stress and grief? How can you best provide that for yourself? Take care of yourself first and then you will be better prepared to support your kids.
