🌿 Mental Health Awareness Month Tip of the Day 🌿
Presented by Shae Fawcett, LPC | EMDR Trauma Specialist

When anxiety, stress, or overwhelming emotions take over, it can feel like your mind is stuck replaying worries, fears, or painful memories. Grounding skills are simple tools that help bring your attention back to the present moment, allowing your nervous system to calm and regulate.

Grounding techniques can help: ✨ Slow racing thoughts
✨ Reduce feelings of panic or overwhelm
✨ Increase a sense of safety and control
✨ Help the body relax
✨ Improve focus and emotional balance

One of the most effective ways to ground yourself is by using your senses. Take a moment to notice: 👀 5 things you can see
✋ 4 things you can touch
👂 3 things you can hear
👃 2 things you can smell
👅 1 thing you can taste

By focusing on what is happening around you right now, you can help your brain shift away from distress and reconnect with the present.

Grounding skills are often an important part of trauma therapy and EMDR treatment, helping clients feel more stable and regulated both in and out of sessions.

💚 Remember: You don't have to eliminate difficult emotions—you just need tools to help you move through them.

🌱 Mental Health Tip of the Day from Shae Fawcett, LPC | EMDR Trauma Specialist

Many of us speak to ourselves in ways we would never speak to someone we care about.

When you notice self-critical thoughts creeping in, ask yourself:

💭 "Would I speak to a friend this way?"

If the answer is no, try offering yourself the same kindness and understanding you would offer someone else:

✨ "I'm having a hard moment, not a bad life." ✨ "I can learn from this without attacking myself." ✨ "Doing imperfectly is still doing."

Self-compassion isn't about lowering your standards or making excuses. It's about creating a supportive inner environment where healing, learning, and growth can happen.

The way you talk to yourself matters. Choose words that help you move forward, not words that keep you stuck.

🐾 Mental Health Tip of the Day 🐾

Did you know therapy animals can help children feel more comfortable and connected in counseling? Animal-assisted therapy can reduce anxiety, build trust, improve emotional regulation, and make it easier for kids and teens to open up during sessions.

At Flower Mound Counseling, FMC’s Caroline Durrett, LPC Associate, offers animal-assisted therapy for children ages 11 and up alongside her therapy dog, Denver 🐶💙

Denver provides a calming, nonjudgmental presence that can help clients feel safe while learning coping skills, processing emotions, and building confidence in therapy.

Sometimes healing starts with a wagging tail and a friendly face. 🐾

🌼 Tip of the Day from FMC’s Caroline Durrett 🌼

Sometimes support can fit right in your pocket. 📱 Mental health apps can be a great tool between sessions or during stressful moments to help build healthy habits, reduce anxiety, and stay grounded throughout the week.

✨ A few favorites: • Rootd — support for anxiety & panic attacks
• Healthy Minds — mindfulness and meditation
• Finch — motivation, routines, and ADHD/task support
• ScreenZen — healthier screen time habits

Remember: Apps are helpful tools, but they’re not a replacement for human connection or professional support when needed. Small steps still count. 💛

Mental Health Awareness Month Tip of the Day from Dr. Tiffany Smith 💚

Parents often hear the term “cutting,” but non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) can show up in many different ways and in both boys and girls. NSSI includes behaviors like scratching, burning, hitting, or other forms of hurting the body to cope with overwhelming emotions. The goal is usually not to end life, but to manage emotional pain, numbness, anger, anxiety, or stress.

Suicidal thoughts involve wanting life to end. Non-suicidal self-injury is typically an attempt to relieve emotional distress. While they are different, both deserve serious attention, compassion, and support.

If you discover your child is self-harming: 💚 Stay calm
💚 Avoid punishment or shame
💚 Listen more than you lecture
💚 Validate their emotions (“I can see you’re really hurting.”)
💚 Work with a mental health professional who specializes in NSSI and teen mental health

Many kids and teens struggle to put big feelings into words. Connection, safety, and support can make a huge difference in their healing.

Mental Health Awareness Month Tip of the Day from FMC’s Dr. Tiffany Smith 💚

One of the best ways to help young children build emotional intelligence is by teaching them the language of feelings early. Reading books about emotions, naming feelings in everyday moments, and validating what your child is experiencing can make a huge difference.

Try saying things like: ✨ “You seem really frustrated that playtime is over.” ✨ “I can see you’re feeling sad because your toy broke.” ✨ “It’s okay to feel angry. Let’s figure out how to shrink that feeling.”

When children have words to describe how they feel, they are less likely to express those emotions through tantrums or meltdowns. Feeling understood helps children feel safe, connected, and more able to regulate big emotions over time. 💛

Books + connection + validation = powerful emotional growth.

Feeling stressed or overwhelmed? Start with your breath. Try “Box Breathing”:

⬜ Inhale for 4 seconds
⬜ Hold for 4 seconds
⬜ Exhale for 4 seconds
⬜ Pause for 4 seconds

This simple technique can help lower blood pressure, regulate breathing, improve focus, and calm your nervous system by countering the fight-or-flight response. Small moments of calm can make a big difference. 🌿

Mental Health Awareness Month – Tip of the Day from Chris Guzniczak, LPC 💙

Compliment someone every day!

Think about the power of a compliment. It feels good when someone notices something about us — it helps us feel seen, valued, and connected. The best part? Compliments are gifts you can give endlessly, and they don’t cost a thing.

So today, brighten someone’s day with a kind word… and by the way, great job reading this 😉✨

Connection before correction.

When your teen is struggling, they often need to feel heard before they’re ready for advice. Try pausing to listen, validate their feelings, and ask: “Do you want advice or just someone to listen?”

Your calm, consistent presence helps build trust and emotional safety — and that matters more than having the “perfect” response.
