Breastfeeding Tips straight from the horses mouth 😍
1) Breastfeed Early and Often- Babies are in the “quiet-alert” phase in the 30 minutes to 2 hours after birth where they are often wide awake, calm, and ready to nurse.
2) Newborns need to eat 8-12 times per day in the first few days of life, which is usually every 1.5-3 hours. This frequency of feedings tells the moms’ body to “make more milk!”
3) Positioning and latch are SO IMPORTANT! Make sure baby is tummy to tummy with mom if using side-lying position and babies’ head, neck, and body are always in alignment. Bring baby to the breast, not breast to baby. I see so many moms do this and it’s uncomfortable, promotes a shallow latch, and leads to sore ni***es.
Make sure baby has a wide latch. To make this easier, take your ni**le from the babies’ nose and bring it down to the mouth eliciting them to open their mouth widely to accept the ni**le. If baby has a shallow latch, break the suction with your finger, pull them off and re-latch them.
Following these simple tips in the first few days of life can prevent many problems that breastfeeding moms often see, like ni**le soreness and inadequate milk supply.
And of course, always consult an IBCLC for support before or after birth.
