The Leadership for Empowerment and Abuse Prevention (LEAP) Project of the Partnership for People with Disabilities at Virginia Commonwealth University has named Wall Residences as a Certified Center for Abuse Prevention and Safety. LEAP’s evidence-based curriculum is designed to teach adults and teens with intellectual and developmental disabilities about healthy, confusing, and unhealthy relationships; asking permission before touching; different ways to say “no;” feelings and physical signs of being comfortable or uncomfortable; and how to get help. A presentation at the Floyd Star Center recognized the agency for earning this distinction, as well as honoring several Wall Residences staff and supported individuals who completed comprehensive coursework to become LEAP trainers. Trainers work in pairs, with each pairing including a person with disabilities, to present the interactive curriculum to small groups.

The LEAP Project is administered by VCU’s Partnership for People with Disabilities. Through funding from the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) and the Department of Social Services Family and Children’s Trust Fund of Virginia (FACT), training is provided free of charge in Virginia in partnership with The Arc of Virginia.

Today is International Day of People with Disabilities, an annual occasion designated to join together to support people with disability in our communities. The day also serves to raise awareness of the importance of creating a future where people with disabilities experience equal opportunity and face no barriers in all aspects of their lives... whether it be going about their day-to-day lives with adequate accessibility in their communities, joining the workforce, or being able to showcase their abilities and reach their goals without facing barriers.
