Just a reminder….

🚨 Anti-Depressants & Hot Weather 🚨

Two of the most commonly known types of psychiatric medication that can lead to overheating in hot weather are tricyclic antidepressants and antipsychotics. These kinds of medications can impair the temperature regulating area of the brain, the hypothalamus, from working 100% as it should.

Many antidepressants increase your likelihood of excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis.

Specifically, Tricyclic Acid and SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) antidepressants are responsible for this.

The way in which antidepressants cause excessive sweating is still relatively unknown – it is thought to be linked to the effects of serotonin, the happy hormone, in trying to maintain the internal core temperature of the body.

Your body sweats to try and cool down the body but overstimulation of this process can lead to overheating and excess sweating.

In the current heatwave, some people who are taking antidepressants will notice not only more sweating than usual, but also simply feeling the heat more.

This can then lead to dehydration, heat stroke, heat rash, and other heat related issues, so it’s essential that you’re really on top of all the regular hot-weather-related care, such as drinking plenty of water, taking time out of the sun, and avoiding overexertion.

Please stay safe, and help your loved ones stay safe, too. 💕

Unfortunately, the Junebug center is still without power, like most of us in Floyd county, so today’s class is canceled. I will attempt to reschedule for next Saturday, October 5. Again, I apologize for the inconvenience.

09/27/2024

Due to the effects of the tropical storm, I’ve been unable to update anyone online or over text all day. My class scheduled for tomorrow is pending the location having power in the morning. I should have confirmation by 7:30 AM whether or not the class will be held. If we are unable to have our class tomorrow we will attempt to reschedule for October 5 at 9 AM at the Junebug Center in Floyd. I apologize for any inconvenience.

On September 26, 2024, over 30 states will be hosting over 300 free naloxone events for the country’s largest annual free naloxone day to date, Save a Life Day: East, covering all the states east of the Mississippi River. The NRV is proud to be a part of this life-saving event. A list of participating states and counties can be found at www.soarwv.org/east.

Naloxone, more well known by one of its brand names, Narcan, is an easy-to use nasal spray that works to reverse opioid overdoses. For the first time in over 50 years of use, this formerly prescription-only medication was approved for over-the-counter distribution in 2023.

Challenging stigma that is often associated with naloxone and harm reduction programs is also a major mission of the day, according to Save A Life Day coordinator, Caroline Wilson.“Our goal is to promote positive messaging around naloxone that lasts all year,” said Wilson. Overdose is such a tragic topic, but there are solutions. We want the thought of saving someone’s life to be a no-brainer- ‘normalized,’ if you will. That’s why much of our anti-stigma campaign is comprised of cute ‘Narcanimal’ stickers, fun buttons, and cool digital photo frames. The message is that saving lives is for everyone.” Organizers are shipping over 50,000 stickers nationwide, featuring eastern wildlife animals carrying life-saving naloxone.

Naloxone pick-up sites often include churches, clinics, libraries, colleges, recovery homes, gas stations, fire departments, groceries, parks, and local dollar stores. According to SOAR WV Co-Director, Joe Solomon, “The idea isn’t to get people to come to you, but to meet people where they are. It’s inspiring to see how creative folks get, setting up pop-up booths, driving around with 4-wheelers, even throwing parades.”

Rise Above, NRHD and staff from each of the locations below will be available to offer free naloxone, information and swag. We look forward to connecting with the community on Appalachian Save a Life Day!
