👁️ What is Myopia
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a common vision condition where you can see close objects clearly, but distant objects appear blurry.
- In a healthy eye, light focuses directly on the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye).
- In a myopic eye, the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, so light focuses in front of the retina instead of on it making objects look blurry.
When the eye grows too long (usually over -6.00D or 26mm axial length), it can stretch and weaken the retina — increasing the risk of serious eye diseases.
⚠️ Major Complications:
👁️ Myopic Macular Degeneration (MMD): Damage to the central retina → blurred or distorted vision.
⚡ Retinal Detachment: Flashes, floaters, or a “curtain” over vision = emergency.
🌀 Glaucoma: Gradual optic nerve damage; often symptom-free early on.
🌫️ Early Cataracts: Lens clouding can occur at a younger age.
🔍 Posterior Staphyloma: Bulging at the back of the eye, worsening vision over time.
✅ Protect Your Vision:
Schedule yearly dilated eye exams or OCT scans.
Monitor axial length yearly.
Consider myopia control (atropine drops, Ortho-K, MiSight lenses).
Maintain good outdoor time and visual breaks during near work.
