"My world had become a scary place. Violence, frequent ambulance rides, and homelessness were my everyday life. My best friend died from fentanyl. I lived in a lot of cockroach-infested places, with prostitutes and old, creepy men.
I went to a rehab in Colfax willingly to detox, but only so that I could get clean enough to use just on the weekends instead of daily. They used to call me “Big Five” in rehab because I was the only one who was addicted to five different substances at the same time. I met Tayelor, a graduate of the Powerhouse Women and Children’s Center, at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting where she was sharing her story. She told me about the men’s program at Powerhouse, and I immediately applied.
Since coming to the Men’s Residential Recovery Center, I have remained sober and even quit smoking ci******es, which is a really big deal to me. I am getting freedom from my addictions as I completely separate myself from my old lifestyle. I am maturing emotionally and physically. I don’t crave the relationships I was once so dependent on.
Recently, I had the opportunity to go back to my rehab as a guest speaker. The whole place was so fired up for recovery after hearing how far I had come and that change was really possible, even for someone like me and them. One man even decided to apply and recently moved into the men’s center. Jesus is doing miracles here.” - James, Resident of the Men's Recovery Center
