"After my mom died from cancer, I was so disappointed. I felt so discouraged that she didn't recover after all these people prayed for her and said she was going to pull through. Everything happened so fast. I needed to leave, so I packed my bags and headed to Arizona.
For almost 8 years, I lived with different friends and family but moved every 3–4 months. Wherever I stayed, there was some sort of domestic abuse, both verbal and physical, and I started abusing all different types of substances. I was constantly on the run, trying to find a place to start over, and my life was in just a few boxes and bags.
When I was younger, I had matched with a mentor from Shoulder to Shoulder, and no matter how hard I had tried to push him away, he always stayed in contact. He encouraged me to come back home and check out Powerhouse's Leadership College.
All those years ago, I had run away from God, but coming into a healthy community here at Powerhouse felt so reassuring. I realized quickly that Powerhouse was the refuge I had been looking for. I'm no longer afraid to ask questions and learn about how to break out of these destructive patterns in my life. I have the freedom to focus on my sobriety here and actually work through conflicts healthily, instead of running away. I finally feel safe.”
