𦷠How Your Horseās Teeth Affect Their Muscles (More Than You Think!)
When we think about performance issues, tension, or uneven muscling, we often look to the saddle, hooves, or training program. But one area thatās frequently overlooked? The mouth.
A horseās teeth are directly connected to the balance of the head and jaw and that balance influences the entire body. When dental balance is off (sharp points, uneven wear, hooks, waves, etc.):
⢠The jaw canāt move freely
⢠The TMJ (temporomandibular joint) becomes restricted
⢠Chewing becomes uneven
⢠Poll and throatlatch tension develops
⢠The neck and shoulder muscles begin compensating
Because the jaw connects through fascial lines into the neck, back, and even the hindquarters, imbalance in the mouth can show up as:
š¹ One-sided muscling
š¹ Difficulty bending one direction
š¹ Resistance to contact
š¹ Head tossing or bracing
š¹ Back soreness
š¹ Shortened stride behind
The body is incredibly good at compensating until it canāt anymore. Proper, routine dental care helps restore symmetry in the jaw, which allows the TMJ to soften, the poll to release, and the topline to function more correctly. When the mouth is comfortable, the rest of the body has a much easier time relaxing and building balanced muscle.
If youāre doing bodywork and the tension keeps coming back⦠it might be worth asking whatās happening inside the mouth.
