In 1954, De Beers mine workers in Kimberley, South Africa were subjected to daily x-ray inspections before leaving the mines.

This was meant to stop smuggling, as miners often swallowed diamonds or hid them in cuts on their bodies.

Radiologists used fluoroscopes—an early x-ray device with little radiation protection—to detect even the smallest gems.

The practice exposed both workers and doctors to harmful radiation, long before the dangers were fully understood.

Despite diamonds being abundant, De Beers maintained scarcity and high prices through stockpiling and marketing, even shaping the global tradition of diamond engagement rings.
