Japan 2025 trip highlight: getting to visit the farms and manufacturing facilities where we source our 2X matcha!

We arrived just after the first harvest, so things were a bit quieter than normal. The “first flush” happens in spring and the “second flush” later in summer after the rainy season.
It was my first time officially in the fields, so naturally I had to pick some tea.
The first rows with taller stems show an example of both the hand harvesting and the shading process that helps develop chlorophyll and nutrients in the leaf.
Most of bushes we saw had been pruned down more than normal (something done every few years to “reset” plant growth) and cuttings used as a natural fertilizer.
We were not able to take pictures or video of manufacturing during the rest of our tour. But every step in the process (as well as the hospitality we were shown) confirmed that we have the right partners for providing the highest quality matcha.

Today is a big deal! Gil’s been on our KandK team for several years now and we just offered him a full time job to help us take it to the next level! Today was his first day (scroll to last picture to see the guys at work with their cute aprons 😂).
If you know him you know he loves our tea, he is super generous, he’s a really cool Hawaiian guy 🤙, his smile lights up the room, and he has a really big heart! We are excited to have him on board!! Get ready to see him more often at our midtown booth and possibly others and give him some love!

to year one (2018) with the business and one of our first events with .steele03 (giving the double 👍). We served our Blue Magic tea to the winner of the as they hosted a bike race through Folsom and Auburn and back again. Claire was our first intern. She came back last year for the fall season and again this summer as a social marketing intern. We just offered her a job as one of our first official employees to help take K&K to the next level.
