Receptive and expressive language are the basis of language development. A child’s receptive language skills precede their expressive language skills. Receptive and expressive language are two major areas that are addressed in speech therapy.

Milestones are a great way to monitor your child’s growth and development, and are often the first “sign” if they are showing delays. Here are a few examples of gestural milestones that are expected by 16 months of age. Practice some of these common gestures with your little one!

Many famous people, including Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, have communication difficulties. He is the most decorated Olympian of all time. Yet, he stated in his book that he would swim to escape from bullying and the struggles associated with his sound production errors (also known as articulation errors). He said that he couldn't even tell people that he had a lisp because he would mispronounce the "L" and "S" in the word "lisp."

Remember, just like Michael Phelps, you can achieve anything you set your mind to, despite communication difficulties. And you're not alone in this journey. NeuroKids is here to provide the support you need.

Prepositions are small but mighty! They are words that a child learns early on; they are essential for following directions and can completely change a sentence's meaning and purpose.

Practice using different prepositions during pretend play with your little one - "Put the pig IN the barn" or "Put the train UNDER the bridge."

Using gestures (including sign language) is not a replacement for verbal language; it is a bridge to it! A child’s brain can use gestural communication before developing verbal communication. Exposing a child to sign language and gestures can often help them learn to speak more quickly.

Kids love attending therapy sessions because they get to play, although there is so much more to the session. Quality 1:1 time with their therapist during play-based activities that target their therapy goals makes the kids always want to return for more.

Increased participation and engagement lead to increased mastery of skills.

We consider many aspects of speech during a child's evaluation and therapy sessions, such as articulation, phonology, fluency, voice, rate, and intonation. Speech-language pathologists continually assess and monitor others' speech patterns to ensure they provide the best treatment program for their clients.

When NeuroKids first started, we considered many different names. We wanted to focus on our target clientele (kids) while highlighting the basis of what we do—training and retraining the brain, specifically related to developmental therapy. No matter what type of therapy you are pursuing or what diagnosis your child may have, everything you do involves the brain. 🧠

There are many things you can do to get your baby's attention. These include nursery songs and rhymes, playing peek-a-boo, using a high-pitched voice, using simple words and phrases, and using emotional words (such as "Yay!", "Wow", and "Uh-oh!"). An infant's brain processes this information differently, allowing them to pay attention more easily.
