Voice is everything. The first book I purchased when Henry’s litter was whelped was authored by Dr Ian Dunbar. Conversing and talking with with your dog. Developing mutual trust and a positive relationship. You have heard someone yelling at their dog to Sit!!! Down!!! Would you want to obey that command? Then there’s the yell and yank on a prong or chain collar. Yikes! Is the dog avoiding pain or understand what sit actually means? Voice is everything. Thank you Dr Dunbar.

Voice is Everything One of the things that makes my Dad such a good dog trainer — and such a good Dad — is that he praises often, and he praises well. It’s not a skill to take for granted.

Seeing a beloved pet struggle to breathe is one of the most frightening moments any owner can face, but staying calm helps you act effectively. Learning to perform the Heimlich maneuver on a large dog provides a way to clear an airway obstruction quickly.

1. Position yourself behind your dog and wrap your arms securely around their midsection, right beneath the rib cage.

2. Form a firm fist with one hand, cup the other hand over it, and deliver five quick, upward thrusts into the soft area of the belly.

3. Check the mouth after each cycle of thrusts to see if the blockage has shifted enough to be retrieved carefully by hand.

Doing these motions with precision keeps the force directed toward the diaphragm, which is necessary to push air through the windpipe and dislodge foreign objects.
